I have a 1979 Bayliner with 140 horse Mercruiser, serial #5213648 and I am not sure wich end drive I have. I would like to put a water pump kit in for maintence reasons and also the engine tends to over heat at an idle. If I pull he rpms up to 7 or 800, the engine cools right off. Thanks in advance.

Re: Water pump kit

Is this in the water or muffs?
And am I reading correctly that if you bring the RPMS UP to 7-800 then it cools off?
Where are you at RPM wise @ idle?

Ayuh,... Click on the Merc parts link above,... follow the path to the waterpump kits...
You need either This 1, or This 1, depending on your answers to the questions along the way...

Your engine should be idling at 700-800.

Re: Water pump kit

Got busy and didn't get a chance to finish this discusion. To answer your questions, the boat is in the water when this happens and I believe the rpms are set to spec. I meant that I pull the rpm up 3 or 400 and the it cools off. I found the right pump kit at the Merc dealer and have the drive all apart. The pump cover and the impeller are off and the base seems to be stuck. I'm afraid I will break something if I force it. I will include a picture. Any suggestions on how to get this base off without breaking it. I understand that this kit is a maintenance issue and I am hoping it will solve this over heating problem. Again, thanks! (Sorry, I can't figure out how to include a picture)

I didn't see one. I will look again. The manual doesn't show the order of the gaskets very clearly. Where would I find a diagram detailing the order of reassembly.

Re: Water pump kit

I have managed to get the pump base off with no damage. The kit I have,is a Merc water pump upper repair kit #46-96148T 8. It seems to have many more parts to than I appear to need. Oddly enough, it doesn't have the seal for the base. Do I need to replace the seal, as it looks to be in good condition. Thanks

Re: Water pump kit

if you weren't going to replace the base should have left it alone . go by a new base it will come with oring and gasket. there might be extra gaskets

Re: Water pump kit

In the kit I had purchased, there was an O-ring, and a gasket for the base and the manual suggested that I remove the base, clean it and replace the O-ring, gasket and the seal. I later discovered the seal was not included in the kit. My Question is, do I need to replace that seal or can I re-use the existing one. It appears to be in good shape. I guess I don't want to fix things that don't need fixin. If I dont need to replace the base that would save me a couple of dollars and another trip to the store. Thanks again!

Re: Water pump kit

Well thats what I will do. Sorry if I seemed a little dense. I assumed the seal in the pump base was a separate item. I didn't understand that it came insalled in the base because the o-ring and the gasket came with the kit. I think I get it now. Thanks for your patience and help.

Well I got all the parts I needed and the pump is put back together. Thanks again for you help. Hope it solves that " overheat at idle" problem.

Re: Water pump kit

I put the 'o' ring in with just a water proof grease on it, and I pack the space between the seals with the same grease. As long as the shaft is good and the 'o' ring area of the housing is clean, put it all back together. Since you're have the pump base out I STRONGLY recommend you do a pressure and vacuum test before you fill it with oil...

Re: Water pump kit

will test it ,hopefully the little water i get in drive will go away this year as water pump seals were pretty bad but it always pressure tested good.

Re: Water pump kit

I have the drive all put together, oilled, greased and ready to be installed. I recieved my allignment tool and am not sure how to use it. It goes into the gimble bearing and right up to the second ridge on the tool with no resistance. The second ridge goes about 1 inch into the gimble bearing. I'm not sure of the if the tool is in all the way or if the alignment is so far out it won't go in. I had the drive off 2 or 3 times last year and never checked the alignment. Since you guys and the manual make such a big deal about this I thought I had better check and make sure it is ok. Seeing as I have the right tools, I should use them properly. Should this be a new thread? Thanks, Ken
