This boat and motor are so cool! Please start a proper restoration thread for it in the restoration section so everyone can enjoy it! It will get a bit buried here in the Other outboards section.

Re: Westbend 80hp

Quoting from the ABOS Service Manual:

"One third pint of two cycle engine oil should be mixed with each gallon of gasoline. The amount of oil in the fuel may be reduced after the motor is well broken in, provided the highest quality of Heavy Duty Outboard Oil is used. The minimum reccommended fuel-oil ratio is 48:1, or half the reccommended amount of oil. If the amount of oil is reduced it is extremely important that the fuel and oil be thoroughly mixed, that the idle mixture screws be carefully checked to make sure that any error is on the "rich" side, and that the reccommended high High Speed Jets are used. Marine white gasoline is preferred but if not available use a good grade of regular gasoline. Gasoline and oil should be thoroughly mixed in a separate container before filling fuel tank.

The lower unit gears and bearings are lubricated by oil contined in the gear case. Only TEXACO Outboard Gear Oil, SAE 90 or other approved outboard gear oil should be used.

And on and on.....

Whew!!

Man! I'd run that on 24:1 for sure. What's the sense in risking a great old engine to save a few bucks on oil? Sounds like it has plain bearings. And they're not new, either.

Yup, I'd use 24:1 for sure.

Re: Westbend 80hp

alright. got my seat structures built and installed. I have pretty much coated everything with 2 coats of paint, except for the inside of the roof(its t ime consuming). Once the paint is dry, all thats left is installing the steering box, controls, make my seats, etc. I am hoping to take it out within the next week or two before its completely finished to test the engine and stuff. new pics:

I've worked on a few Chryslers in the past and I have to agree, they were a decent engine and a simple design. I'm willing to bet, that this WB800 here has a fully jewelled crank and rod assembly. A lot of these engines were in for competition, as well as pleasure. To be safe, I would find some factory specs, but then again, F_R hasn't led anyone wrong.:D

Nice job on the boat and you're really making some progress. I would love to see a video of that boat screamin across the lake.:D

Re: Westbend 80hp

I put my new rectifier on and and new regulator and got the engine running good again, so I Decided to take it out to the lake and give it a shot. I get her in and start to make my way over to the dock and all of a sudden i stop moving. Engine is running/throttling normally, the gearbox is in engaging properly, but no propulsion. So I turn it off and tilt the outboard up and have a look. come to find out, the plastic cover cone had somehow worked its way off to the point where the metal dowl that locks the prop to the lower unit shaft had fallen out. so my shaft was spinning and the prop wasnt going anywhere. I am not sure how it happened, I guess the plastic cone's roll pin came out or something allowing it to unscrew far enough for the prop pin to come out. this style doesnt have a nut on the prop, just a pin that locks it in and is cover by the plastic cap(oldschool). so I found a big piece of wire on the boat and stuck it through the pin hole and bent it around, and luckily i was able to limp it back to the trailer despite the wind blowing me all over the place. I also noticed that the area where my drain plug inserts on the transom was a little wet after I pulled her out of the water, and i was only in for 20 minutes or so. I hope i dont have to bad of a leak, if I Do, is there and way to figure out where it is? thanks all.

Re: Westbend 80hp

That seems to be a common occurrence with older motors that have sat for a while.

Re: Westbend 80hp

Shouldn't be too hard to replace the prop, might be able to get it re-hubbed. If not, put a a free classified wanted ad on the Webvertize ads at www.aomci.org.
