Hello all, I have a 89 force 125 hp that I was told had the wrong tilt and trim pump. the tilt worked but not the trim, I purchased another unit with cylinders and do not know where the hydrolic lines connect up. The old unit had 5 ports and the new one has 4 ports and I only have 4 lines, two for the trim and two for the tilt. My new pump has 4 ports, in a row with the two inside one over the other, I was trying to locate a exploded picture to see how they hook up. On the old unit one port was not used and another did not have the line hooked up at all. Can I please get some help???????????????????????? Russell

i think you were told wrong. 1989 is a prestolite year. Both 4 and 5 port models will work just fine. Tilt is the more difficult pressure for the pump to hold. If it tilted then it would have also trimmed. Your problem all along was probably a bad cylinder or a misconnected line. Look up the mercury parts diagrams. the oil tubes will be labeled "A", "B", "C", and "D" and the diagram will show you which port and which cylinder for each tube.

Hope this is some help. The attached pics are of my 1991 120hp set-up.

Bottom port goes to back of trim cylinder.

side ports:
Aft goes to bottom of tilt cylinder
Most forward port goes to top of tilt cyl
Second port from front goes to top of trim cyl

Hello again, I may have screwed up taking the old unit off, I pulled the motor off and found that one of the trim lines was not even connected, the top one, so I changed the units out but the newer one only has four ports to connect and I think I need to switch two but would like to know just which ones, I think it is the two inside ones. I cannot find a diagram of tne newer pump to be sure, my manual only shows the five port unit

KenOverton's post above gives you all the information you need. Aft is the port furthest away from the hull of your boat. Forward would be the port closest to the hull (aka transom) of your boat.

There is no difference between four and five port. The fifth port should just be plugged if you have it. The fifth port is not part of the check valve circuit. It will bleed down if you try to use it for lifting. It is used for sensors and gauges only. On most pumps the fifth port is not even threaded. On many it is not even drilled out. However the prestolite was used on everything from Mercruiser to Johnson to Suzuki. It's quite possible that some pumps will have the fifth port drilled through and threaded. Unlikely, but possible.

Re: 125hp force tilt & trim line connections

Update! Update!! Well I still have not figured out the line connections on my replacement pump but I checked back on the unit I took off, it is the standard looking unit BUT of the 4 holes threaded on the side only the two outside ones are drilled and the one comming up in the bottom is also not drilled, now I see why I only had tilt.

My replacemsnt pump has 4 threaded holes all on the bottom, two side by side and the other two next to each one like OO
OO only the spacing from the two rows is closer then my computer would let me do, any ideas on my next direction ? I am going to take the outboard off again tomorrow evening, its a heck of a job for one man but I build a hoist to help.

there is no decent diagram for the pump with all four ports facing down. You are going to need about 10ft of 3/16" CuNi 9010 tubing and eight brass tube nuts. The CuNi has better salt water characteristics than Stainless because it doesn't eat up your aluminum. Equally important you can cut, bend, and flare it with hand tools.

go to NAPA and get some 3/16 inverted flare plugs. Plug up three of the holes run the pump up and see if fluid squirts out. If so, then it is an "up" port. Repeat for all four ports using both up and down. Bend tubes according to your findings. Don't use regular brake tubing. It will rust and cause more problems than worth. Go to a brake shop and get some "easyBend" tubing. It looks kind of like copper but it will take the high pressure without swelling or bursting.

good luck.

What you have there is the oildyne replacement kit sold by mercury - p/n 853515A1. I just happen to have the installation instructions for that kit on file. If you have your old tubing hang on to it. That pump last a pretty good long time but when it breaks you are better off throwing it away rather than fixing it. For example - that flat little piece of aluminum that holds pump to transom bracket. Adapter plate p/n 855248 = $189. Yup. $189 for something you can make in your garage. The whole pump is like that. When the hydraulic circuits give out it is cheaper to throw it away, buy a prestolite, and have the prestolite rebuilt. Which is ironic because the prestolite has much higher resale value. At any rate -

row closest to engine, port closest to transom > top of tilt ram
row closets to engine, port furthest from transom > bottom of tilt ram
row furthest from engine, port closest to transom > back of trim cylinder
row furthest from engine, port furthest from transom > top of trim cylinder

RRitt, Thank you, thank you, thank you I made the connections and it works but growls on the way up, it may be air, it comes down but dops the last few inches on the way up or down the motor kicke out and I have to wait for it to cool before going again, it seems to be kicking out in the motor and not in the control power lines. what type oil should I use on this unit? when I installed it the fluid still in it was a off white color, I drained as much as I could get and added 30 weight non detergent oil.

white color is usually water in oil. that's bad. the bypass valve in tilt ram loves to rust if you get water in system. the growling could be rust behind motor magnets (magnets dragging on armature because they are coming unglued). You should try lifting motor/reservoir up off valve body and see if growling follows motor. if it is magnets and you let it go on then you will probably lose option of inexpensive rebuild. overheating probably related to growling.

Hello again, I was afraid it might be water, I bought it off ebay and it was to cold and nasty to try and put on earlier so I am out of the sellers return time, so I am not sure where to go at this time, I am still working with the seller at this time but you were a great help and I just may be back on this.

you have to be really careful on ebay. A $4 can or spray paint can make anything look good enough for a snapshot. Sometimes you just have to laugh. I've seen stuff on ebay where you can see the spray paint on wiring ... and people still bid it up because the paint looks so nice and shiny.
