I have an old Johnson 25 horse outboard motor on my bowfishing boat, I went to start it the other day and when the kill switch was disengaged (allowing to start) the starter would turn it over a few times then it would start clanking and the starter would disengage. I did get the outboard started once, but it would not start again. When the killswitch is engaged (not allowing to start) it turns the motor over fine! I have the starter motor off and these are the numbers

0255625M030SM
AMERICAN BOSCH

and the numbers on the motor model # is 25R77S
SERIAL #E4659716

can anyone point me towards a starter? A boat mechanic offered me one for 180$$$$!!!! Any cheaper than that?

Probably not the starter, check battery condition and cables for good contact, may also be a bad solenoid. As far as the kill switch, you either have bad wiring to the switch or the switch is bad.

Well you have connections at the battery, solenoid and starter. Make sure all are clean. Check cables for swelling and cracks, marine starters rarely fail. If the starter is off take it to a starter/alternator shop and have it tested.

The starter still spins and everything, and will turn the motor for a few cranks, but then it starts squealing. If it does this would a bad starter still show up on a tester?

You never meantioned the squealing, could just be a bad bearing. Take it in and get it checked at a starter shop, they can rebuild them for less than replacement.

Re: Johnson 25 horse starter

looking at the diagram i do not see any replaceable bearings.

ARMATURE. No longer available from vendor Bosch. Use 585059 starter motor for 9-tooth starter gear. Use 585061 starter motor for 11- tooth starter gear.

check ebay.

I would take the bottom cover off of your starter and drop some oil in the nipple, where the shaft drops into. While you're at it, put some oil on the top end of the shaft where it goes through the housing. This will take care of the squeeling.

If it is just a bad connection, why is it making the starter do this? I am good with mechanical things, but I am really puzzled as to why the starter turns the motor over a few times and then disengages...

Sounds like a new battery is in order. What is the cranking voltage at the starter post when it's spinning and when it stops?

May not be a bad connection, but a weak battery, solenoid switch nearly worn out, corrosion in wires that you can't see, yada yada!!

Get a KNOWN hot battery, use jumper cables from it straight to the starter and see if that bad boy acts ugly then! Work your way backwards to the solenoid switch, etc. if necessary.

Main thing is, just don't get excited!! Don't forget that it took longer than an hour and a half (or so according to the post times) to make this thing to start with.
