Hello Boat World,
I need your opinion... I am selling a late 1950's Johnson 10 hp. The motor hasn't run in years, but is extremely clean and the motor is free and feels like it has good compression.

I have it listed on Craigslist.

I have an offer of $120 for the motor. I know it is tough to say without seeing the motor, but is this in the neighborhood of being fair?

Second, I have a late 1950's 25 horse Johnson that is probably a parts motor. It's pretty rough, but it is complete. What do you all think is a fair price for that?

I know I am asking a lot from you guys without ever seeing the motors, but just want to make sure I am not getting taken.

Thanks for your responses!

I paid $125 for my 1959 johnson 10hp, it needed coils.

If you can't demonstrate a running condition its not worth more than a parts engine, get it running and you can ask $200+.

The 1970 looks good , I would fix the carb and ask $400, take offers.

i don't see you getting much for the 25, looks like the cowl has been cut.

the 10 the color hurts it. i just refreshed a 1956 10hp, runs like new. not running 120 is about all you can expect, the buyer could easily spend 200 to get it running properly.

the 70 9.5 carb cleaning, if it has spark on both plugs, it shoud run, and be worth atleast $350.

all these motors are going to have to have the carbs cleaned and rebuilt, and water pumps serviced.

I wish you were closer to me and I'd make you an offer on that 25hp. It's a '52-'54 johnson and should not be red and white as far as I know. It should be green like the one below. The tiller handle itself on that motor is worth at least $40 of anyone's money, and you could get twice that on the auction sites.
I think the 120 is fair as well.....

Show some compression readings and tell us the lower end is OK and you'll get some bites. Old motors like this are old but can be as good as gold. Considering there isn't much in the parts store anymore the better the history and condition the better the price.

Where are you located? Old motors are a treat for me to futz with and I may be interested. Do tanks come with any of these? The old ones SH a two hose tank. That alone is an expensive purchase and there aren't many savvy buyers who will give you $120 if there is no tank. I'd have to spend another $60-75 for a tank. Pretty spendy motor then.
