Hello all... I am fairly new to boating. I acquired a 14 foot aluminum boat last fall with the above mentioned outboard. I was able to do a little bit of fishing last year, but this motor would never run very well at low idle. I always had to keep the throttle open quite a bit to keep it running.

I would like to rebuild the carburetor and replace the plugs (to see if that helps with the idle issue) before taking it out on the lake this Spring, but I'm not sure what parts I need. When searching for parts on iboats.com, I don't see my motor listed. Does anyone know the part number of the carburetor kit I would need? Are there any other carb parts not included in a kit that might be worth replacing while it's apart?

Also, I left this motor on the boat out in the cold and snow all Winter here in NE Ohio. Was it okay to do that or could I run into problems from doing so?

Any other thoughts on what could cause the idle problem? Any suggestions on routine maintenance on this motor?

Your help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Carb kit # 382048 from any evinrude dealer. Soak carb in carb cleaner overnite if possible or get a couple of cans of carb cleaner and make sure all orifices are clean. Make sure you get the low speed idle circuit clean, there are (3) little holes in the carb throat that must be clean and that you have spray from the cleaner coming out of them to idle correctly. Also make sure that float is adj. correctly. Lastly, make sure the points are clean set to .020, coils aren`t cracked and the link and sink( the timing in relationship to the throttle) is set right. All these will have a adverse affect on idleing.

When you have the motor running, set the idle to a speed at which it will not cut off. This is done using the dial at the bottom of the tiller handle.

Re: 1969 Evinrude 9.5 (9922S) Questions

Okay... I got my carb kit and plan to redo the carb soon. Anything else I need to pay special attention to when rebuilding this carb? The kit actually has a lot more little pieces in it than I was expecting. I've never taken a carburetor apart before so I'm a little intimidated by the all the small parts. Will it be obvious where they all go?

Also, ultra353 mentions making sure the link and sink is set right. I think I found this in my repair manual, but I don't quite understand what it is or how to do it. Any help?

Thanks

Re: 1969 Evinrude 9.5 (9922S) Questions

Just thought I'd post that the carb rebuild and a set of new plugs solved the low idle issue. Took it out on the lake last weekend and ran GREAT! It will idle so low that the boat barely moves when in gear and also runs really smooth at WOT. Last year I couldn't idle it low enough to prevent a wake in the marina. Thanks to all who helped me out!
