I recently picked up a used pontoon boat without a motor. The previous owner had bought it just for the 25 hp Evinrude that was on it which he thought was a mid 80's model. He did leave the remote controls and wiring harness with the boat. Since used outboards seem to be found without controls and wiring harnesses more often than not, I'm thinking that if I narrow my search to something that will fit my existing harness, I can save some money and not have to change anything on the boat. All of my J&E experience is with motors from the 50's & 60's so I don't know that much about 70's and newer models. I have the round black plug with 5 wires. I know this should fit a range of years and horsepowers but I don't know which ones. Could someone tell me what range of years and HP used the black plug and was this plug exclusive to Evinrude or did the Johnsons use the same plug?

I dunno, but I think the mid-80's motor should have a red plug. Here is what I understand:
Black plugs are for Hydro-Electric shift and amplified battery ignition.
Yellow plugs are for Hydro Electric shift and Mag CD ignition.
Red plugs are for mechanical shift and Mag CD ignition.
Mechanical shift with magneto ignition-----??? I'm not sure. Maybe it is black. Somebody will come along that knows.

Evinrudes and Johnsons are the same thing.

Re: Black plug

Id suggest you search E-bay for wiring harnesses for mid 80s 25 hp motor..and see the pictures they post.

you have the harness from your control and can tell if they are similar..

but if you are wanting to power your pontoon, you dont want another 25 !!

do you??

the hanress you might really want, might have a warning horn, and wires for TNT ( I doubt the 25 had TNT!) you might need a wiring hanress that supports a VRO oil tank!!!

you might not have as many options as you think...

good luck

Re: Black plug

Ideally I would like 35-40 HP since the lake I'll be keeping it at has a 40 HP limit. I'm not nessicarrly tied to using the existing harness or even an Evinrude, just interested in what options will work with the existing controls so I know what to keep my eye out for when scouting for a good deal.

My existing controls are set up for mechanical shift and has post '79 cables. There is no provision for T&T and I'm not really interested in that. I think the harness should be just for starting as there are no provisions for gauges or a VRO. I have 5 wires; red-Bat; yellow-start; purple-choke and 2 black-MAG.

Re: Black plug

well, dont be penny wise and dollar foolish.

on a pontoon boat having TNT will make a huge difference...even if the boat is docked in a slip when not in use....

if my memory serves me, it seemed like it would be a huge pain to lift a 40 hp motor from the deck of the pontoon....I think my buddies pontoon had a full width rear bench seat!!!

I would think that the controls would be easy to find for use with what ever motor you get, if infact they dont come with the motor you buy!!!

good luck

Yeah, after thinking about it, I guess the black one for Amplified/Hydro has a bunch more than just five wires. More like about 10.
