Last season my primer solenoid went bad on my 1989 100XP engine. I now just use the red lever to prime and start the engine. After looking at the cost of a new primer, over 150 bucks I would like to continue to use the manual method

Is that ok?

Sure, however it's not usually the solenoid that fails but the wiring going to it.

check the ground wire to the solenoid. known to corrode, and the primer not work.
