Re: Gear Lube Oil--what is this stuff?
I called mercury, the service guy told me that there would be no problem, say's he's done it many times, he also told me that this is not synethic oil. I'm going to do as j martin suggested & flush it a couple of times.
I don't think you need to flush it. The drain is at the exact bottom of the cavity when the motor is vertical. Any of the gear lubes are tacky, so they take some time to drain down off the parts. If you let it drain well it should be good enough. A few drops left in would be better than some fuel oil residue or something left over from flushing.
I got my XR4 pretty cheap because a "Mercury mechanic" had made about 9 mistakes in maintaining it, causing it to be a real dog.
What makes the oils not mixable is not whether it's synthetic or not, but the additive packages.
I play around with things, and I have found out that I can add a tackifier to used hydraulic oil and make a very good bar and chain oil out of it. One day I got a barrel of used synthetic screw compressor oil. I filtered 5 gallons of it, put it in the mixer set up to slowly blend in 2% tackifier. It started making some racket, so I went back to see what was going on. The tackifier had formed a hard plastic disk on top of the oil that was banging around on the mixer blade. It had reacted with an additive in the compressor oil.
That's why if the manufacturer says don't mix them, I don't.
hope it helps
