I was given a boat and motor I believe to be 1967. The motor is 2 cylinder with duel points. I have no manual but need to set new points. Can you tell a real novice how to do this. I found a shop about an hours drive away that said they could do it for $150. I would try rather trial and error.

Rotate the shaft till one set of points is open as far as it will go. Use a feeler gauge to adjust the gap to .020". Rotate the shaft and do the same on the other set. Most important: make sure the flywheel and shaft tapers are clean and dry and use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 40-45 ft/lbs. Ignore this advice and risk destroying the crankshaft and flywheel. At least you won't have to worry about points any more.

I should go back into the repair business. It was $10/hour when I was doing it and people thought they were getting had.

Read the link. Basically there is a cam at the top of the crank where the points ride on, the cam has a high point which causes the points to open, using a feeler gauge measured at .020 set the air gap when they open, set one side and rotate the crank to the high point on the other set and set them the same, that should get you going. Put some light oil on the oiler wick while you are in there, make sure you don't oil anywhere else.

As said above, and it's Dual-plural, not duel-as in gentlemans gunfight.

Remove flywheel.
Change out points and condensors.
Rotate crankshaft until the points are at their largest opening. Gap at .020.
snug down the hold down screws.

Rotate crankshaft 180 deg, and repeat.

Rotate 180 deg and recheck gap on set no.1. When correct, tighten the hold down screws.

Rotate crankshaft 180 deg., and repeat process.

Clean crankshaft taper, and reinstall flywheel. TORQUE the flywheel nut to 40 ft/lb. with a TORQUE WRENCH. If you break the cam, it is not available from OMC.
