Re: register a boat trailer

Did you buy it out of state?
If so, was it a non titling state?
Do you have a bill of sale?
Was it yours, and now you moved to IL ?

These questions will determine the answer.

Re: register a boat trailer

You have a few options to choose from. Have the seller give you a bill of sail for the boat trailer that includes the VIN number make and model and the year of the trailer on the bill of sale. Another option is to have the seller file for a lost title at their cost, or another option is tell the DMV it is a custom made trailer. I had to do that with one of my trailers declare it as a homemade trailer, and that's how I did it. If you do it as a homemade trailer you will get a custom VIN number for the trailer that you will have to put on the tongue and everything. That is one way of doing it though and pretty easy. However my trailer actually became 2 trailers welded together so it was easier for me to do that. Hope this helps you out a little.

My trailer came from Wisconsin no title. I registered it in Illinois as a homebuilt.
They will ask if it was from a kit. Tell them no you have a friend that's a welder and you built it from scratch. No receipts or certificate of origin.
