I am working to reassemble my lower unit from my Evinrude outboard. The service manual says to replace the locking stud nuts. Most online parts stores want ~$5 for each nut. This is OMC PN 307160.
Is there anything special about these nuts?
Can I just purchase replacement lock nuts from a hardware store?
Do I need stainless? This motor will not see salt water.

There is nothing exotic about them. Nylok nuts from the hardware store. Stainless doesn't cost that much more, so use them. If you have any Locktite, a drop of that will work just as well as new nuts.

More importantly, be sure to use a torque wrench and tighten them to specs. Shoot for the low limit on the numbers. Broken studs are common. But they are often caused by a bent upper gearcase. Your manual should show how to check it.

I have the manual with the torque specs and a torque wrench. Thanks for the guidance on shooting for the low-end to avoid breaking a stud. Thanks for saving me $10.
