Re: 73 9.5 Evinrude stop switch question.

I will do those additional checks but now I am back to thinking about it running on one cylinder. To check for that do I just pull one spark plug wire and try to start it and then pull the other and see if it runs on just one or the other.

Are any of you in Kansas City area that might be able to help me? I would even pay someone to fix this correctly.

Thanks for sticking with me on this problem. Metty

I'll be in Colby KS in a couple of weeks, but won't have any tools with me. Besides, that's 400 miles from KC.

In my previous descriptions I should have been more clear. In middle of wiring from switch to connectors at points there is also a set of connectors that can be unpugged easily.

Double check the connectors that unplug.

I have checked them. I have checked continuity with them unplugged across each other. Push switch and it shows good. Then I have checked all the way to the actual connectors that connect to the points. I put a lead on each one unhooked from the points and push the switch and tests good. Then I started motor and tried to jump across the middle connectors and therefore deleting the button and that's when I barley got it to cut out and make sparks. How do I verify that it is running on both cylinders? Metty

Wow, you guys are awesome. I just went and bought a spark tester and you all nailed it. No fire to bottom to cylinder, so it has been only running on one therefore no stop switch operation. Yea, maybe I can fix it now. THANKS SO MUCH. Coils look new and updated. What shall I replace???? Mettyfish

Do the free stuff first ,check to make sure you have a good connection where the plug wire screws into the coil, clean and adjust that set of points to .020 with a feeler gauge.

That did it. I had an old parts motor and I replaced the point on bottom plug wire. Fires on both cylinders and stop switch works. YEA. Thanks to all who took a stab at problem. Oh and torque on fly wheel around 40 lbs correct. Thanks, Metty

Good to hear you got that figured out, my stop switch doesnt work either and is the same motor, I will have to get a spark plug tester and see if mine is only running on one cylinder also.

Re: 73 9.5 Evinrude stop switch question.

Yea do that. Because I can't believe how well it ran on one cylinder. You can tell a little difference with two but not much. But I had never been around this version of motor so didn't know much from the start on how it runs. And all my testing was in a barrel. Then once I got the bottom cylinder firing I had the top spark plug unplugged and it would fire right up. So ran well on either one. But the stop switch works perfect now. Crazy. The best thing about this whole issue is I learned a hell of a lot. Not much to that stop circuit also. Good luck with yours. Mettyfish
