Like BT Doctur says, that's where the cable goes through the transom assembly. The plastic sprial wrap goes basically there as well. Just to protect the sheath.

Re: Another mystery??

There is no gasket between the halves.... Just a small 'O' ring that seals the oil passage.

Re: Another mystery??

Still on the shift cable, all in place but not sure, does the small end of the bellows have to go right up to the back of the nut and over the crimp or do i use the cable tie thats in the kit to hold it onto the sheath?

Re: Another mystery??

ok I thought that may be the case, it would be a stretch to get all the way back to the crimp?
so do we assume that leaving the crimp end exposed to the sea water that it wont be affected? or is that why they fail?, thanks for being online and for all your guidance you have been a great help, Bill

Re: Another mystery??

Don't worry about the part of the cable that screws into the bell housing. The bellows just keeps water out of the boat. Position the bellows so that there is enough expansion to allow the outdrive to be raised and lowered.

Re: Another mystery??

What have I done now??
I have followed the instructions and gratfully listened to all the advice and guidance, but I am dissapointed with my result,
the cable is so tight its bearing across the interrupt switch, I checked that it was the same length as the old one, I have gone to the stb side as it comes through the transom, back under the sump and back up to the plate/ bracket at the back of the engine, where did i go wrong? is there a better route?

Re: Another mystery??

If you disconnect it inside the boat and move the cable by hand - it is still stiff? If so, is it possible you kinked the cable during installation?

Diagnose it by doing one thing at a time - check it by hand as mentioned. Depending upon if it is free or stiff will tell you which direction to start looking next.

no its not stiff, it moves freely enough but it seems stretched tight like it needs to be longer, at the monent the outdrive is down if i lift it will be even tighter?

What engine do you have? Here's a pic showing the route for the shift cable:

Re: Another mystery??

The 485 - is that a variation of the infamous 470? Have you checked out the "adults only" sticky at the top of the page? There are manuals there you can download for free. I am not familiar enough with the 485 to be of further help. Sorry! :(
