I have a 4 hp johnson and I tryed setting the points gap to .020. One would stay gaped, the other would spring closed after setting. Now both are springing closed. Could anyone tell me what is going wrong here?

Are you tightening the screw that holds the assembly? That, or failure of the cam wiper, is the only way they can close.

I am tightening the points adjustment screw, it was opening and closing the gap on one of them, but now every time i tighten the screw the other side comes along with it.

Best give us all your gap setting procedure. See if we can determine where you are going wrong.

Are you setting the points with the armature seated and the flywheel properly installed? I think they have to be set through the access port on the flywheel.

I turn adjustment screw, and points seperate. I stick my .020 feel guage in and turn screw until it is againt guage. On the other point though, as i turn the adjustment screw, the points dont seperate.

Any chance that you've stripped the armature plate threads? The armature plate is aluminum and the screws are stainless, so if you over-torque them with a big screwdriver, its not that hard to strip the threads in the plate.

dont see it mentioned by anybody but you can only adjust 1 point at a time then you must rotate shaft to do the other ,you cant adjust them both at once as one is in the closed position and the other is in the open mode!

Cougar1985's comment I think is dead on target.

I didn't read this part in the guide before, but i noticed the part that says top and the rubbing block have to be aligned to set the point. Did this and both of the points are now gaped right. Thanks for the help

If the cam is cracked, it will wear the rubbing block away in short order. Then they won't open.

Right on, I was going in that direction with my earlier post on procedure.

The screw that adjusts the gap and the one that locks the points in place are not the same screw.

the screw with the head on it should be the one to hold your points down, the one with no head should be the eccentric ,it adjusts,,,,,,,,make sure youre on the high side of the lobe on the crank, then set that side ,then turn crank 180 to put other set on high point of the lobe on the crank,,,,turn the crank a few times, check it again,,if its right, you should be good to go if your coils are good, and you have no connections touching the armature plate, this will ground it out, dont ground any of the wires going to the point sets or you will never get fire and poss burn up your coils ,hope you have good luck with it

And this is what I was getting at with the comment about a stripped armature plate. If you tightened the pan head screw that locks the points in place, you can easily strip the threads in the armature plate. That will result in loose points and when you rotate the crank to set the other points, the original set may "back off."
