River Runner on 6hp Evinrude

Hello,
I use a 1979 Evinrude 6 hp on the back of my Gheenoe for steelhead fishing in Michigan and I want to install a Mac's River Runner skeg/prop protector. The lower unit oil drain plug is right in the middle of the skeg. I need to drill 3 holes to install the unit. Would I be drilling right into the oil reservoir?
Anyone with any knowledge on old Evinrudes?

Yes, and yes. If your heart is really set on putting on a prop protector, you might try cleaning up the lower unit really well and putting it on with 3M 5200 adhesive. That will not come off.
