Just curious, are people seeing a big change in the fishing so far this year? I heard that a lot of the boats going out of Newport and San Diego are already bringing in good counts of yellow tail. Water still seems cold, but people are crediting El Nino. My boat is under the knife for the next month or so, so I can't get out there and see for myself!

The Coranados typically hold some nice yellows, whether these being caught now can be directly related to El Nino, I think it's too early to be sure.

Give it a couple months and the overnight boats should be exploding with dorado, yellow tails and the tunnies..

Man I miss SoCal...

At least you guys get to test the waters. Our ocean sportfishing season dosn't open until May 15. Imagine, in the area of California that has the least fishable days during the year, we have the shortest season. Less than 20 mi. from here in Oregon, the season is open year around. I guess the fish don't cross the state line.

thurps, sorry to hear that. I was bummed to hear that we weren't going to get a salmon season at all this year. Should be an epic summer though...

Kev, I'd feel bad for ya, but didn't you head over to Florida or something? I hear they have some pretty tasty fish in those waters also :D Either way, I'd love to see some good sized do do's out at the islands... I have a fever and the only cure is fresh ceviche!

lol..ya..from SoCal to Fort Myers..
Fishing is far different here..
Tarpon?? Why do I wanna catch that thing? Can I eat it? NO? lol then I dont want it in my boat!
I guess being 4 hrs from Key West isnt sooo bad, but I was happier an hour and half from Rosecrans street and Fisherman's Landing in San Diego!

Re: El Nino fishing?

Hey, Kev I used to fish every once and a while where my grandparents lived in Vero beach... never really got anything that great, but that could have been because they sent us out in the canals with mickey mouse fishing rods and cheese for bait!

On a separate note, I cruised the internet and found you a great recipe for Tarpon:

1 Tarpon about 80 pounds.
1 plank the length of the fish...preferrably a soft wood like pine. Hard wood ( like oak) makes for tougher eating.
Olive oil, salt, pepper and paprika to taste.

Directions:

Pre-season the Plank with the ingredients listed above making sure to coat it all evenly.
Place the Tarpon on the plank. Wrap the Tarpon and plank in alluminum foil.
Place it on the coals.
Allow to cook for 45 minutes.
After 45 minutes remove the foil and toss Tarpon in the trash.
Plank serves up to 10 people.

Every time we have had an El Nino here the longfins have come in real close. People were knocking them off with rocks from the jetty.:)
