I wrote in a few weeks back asking all you guys about Sarasota fishing and I did not get alot of positive response for the area in general ( Longboat Key, Sarsota). Well, I,ve got to tell you guys that I had a great fishing experience. I took my 21 ft. c.c. , and I also went out with captain Chris Seger on his 40ft. sportfisher and caught a ton of snapper- mangrove and grey. Also caught grouper like no tomorrow, don't know what is up w/ the ban, we caught plenty and good size too. That is very discouraging considering I drove 1000 miles from KY to fish and grouper is one of my favorite eats and the fact that I start looking forward to going back to Florida to fish the very minute I get back home every year!! Oh well, something to look forward to. Just wanted to tell everybody I think its a great place to fish and all you guys that are lucky enough to live there are my idols, you are very fortunate!!!

Glad to hear the trip worked out so well. That's a long way to drive to come up empty handed. Did you happen to grab any pics?

Re: Sarasota fishing

I lived on Siesta key for a winter, I didn't care for saltwater fishing down there. But freshwater bass fishing was a ball. I found Fl a bit too strange for me in general. I like southern people though, they have manners.

I'm 30 minutes from cape cod now, much better fishing than sarasota.
In the warmer weather of course.
The fabled waters around Cuttyhunk and Elizabeth Islands are worth the trip.
The rips around Monimoy Island, the flats fishing.
Stellwagon bank .
Can't beat it.

Lack of local knowledge is not a good reason to dismiss fishing here.

I lived there.
Theres no cod, stripers, blues, its warm water fishery, good for gamefish but not the greatest eating.

Re: Sarasota fishing

According to your post you lived there one winter and to make a statement that the fish aren't good to eat makes you sound even more ignorant of Fla fishing.

Troypb, happy to hear that you had a great time fishing in Sarasota.

Even though I had fished in Sarasota at night flyfishing for snook I couldn't tell you much about fishing the area. Only had spent a week their flyfishing for snook at night and had a blast fishing around the dock lights seeing snook flip under the lights trying to catch shrimp.

While in Florida I have always had a great time. There are so many places to fish from the north to the keys and different species regardless if you are big game fishing or bottom fishing. Matter of fact I have practicly given up the big game fishing and prefer the bottom fishing in Florida and Bahamas, I just like catching 20 to 40 fish in about four hours. My favorite area is Marathon.

Troypb, if you ever get a chance try the Tarpon fishing around the month of May. Hail Capt. Sam prior to going and I'm sure he will tell ya when about the good time to go is. I went last May and had six hookups and a good fight. Had gone to Ft Myers and Sannibel area.

Re: Sarasota fishing

thanks Fly Rod, the tarpon, snook, grouper and snapper bites have been off the hook lately, maybe not everyone agrees but I think lightly fried snapper is the best eatin' out there.

lightly fried red snapper is as good as it gets with some eggs in the morning.
Ive also been enjoying dining on the grouper, snook and red drum since I was about six years old and I wouldnt have it any other way.
