You have contradictory needs. A dual console is a good family boat. It is not a good fishing boat. The dual console simply takes up too much room. A single console is a little less of a problem but is less of a family boat. The best family/fishing boat is a four corner fish pontoon. But then you lose the performance aspect unless you go to a tri-toon.

There are plenty of great aluminum fish n' ski boats available. Starcraft, Sylvan, Lowe, Princecraft, etc. I'm currently building my older Starcraft SS to be a family-friendly fishing boat.

Which one has priority for you? Fishing or family.

Family is first on my list but we all like fishing. I have a 93 Starcraft fish and ski(fiberglass bow rider ) that is great for family fun time. It has everything I want in a bow rider plus an outboard and a live well.

The trade off's are that the live well is small and is suited mostly for a few dozen shirmp. It also has lower sides so I don't go off shore unless the waves are usually 2 ft or less. And when I do go off shore I never go far enough out to where I can't see land. I guess you would really call that inshore. And anything more than 2 people doing anything close to real fishing becomes very cramped.

My boat is great for what I want out of it. But I would't go using it in fishing tournaments.

I have friends with familys in center consoles. Normally the kids get to sit on the uncushioned floor and flop around when the boat hits waves. But they have it much easier than I when it comes to real fishing and most don't flinch at going 20+ miles out in good weather.

I think you are on the right track. You want the family to be comfortable or they won't go out. You can put up with almost anything when fishing.

I see it the opposite of izoomie--I want to be comfortable (good set up) fishing; the family can put up with anything--and they will go out.

OK OK got to factor in wife's comfort--she gets the cushioned seat in front of the center console, or at the helm. The children and their friends are just fine "bouncing around in the front" on towels or throw cushions (the boat kind).

But who wants to feel like they're riding in a car when they're in a boat? That's no fun!

Same here. I fish 100 days a year. The wife and kids are on the boat maybe 3-4 days a seaon. Of those days, two are fishing and two are doing an overnighter at a friends on the Eastern Shore where the kids like bedding down in the cabin. The wife gets the mates chair at the helm and she's happy.

I had a little Crestliner that was billed as a "Fish and Ski." Turned out to be a little too small for me, but it had carpet, a full windshield, and decent seating. I added a bimini top, a swim ladder, and stereo.

Is this something like what you had in mind?

This what I picked up live/bait tank in the rear and a cooler seat. Two fish/storage box's up front, swim larder/small swim deck 19ft. Removable ski pylon, mounted downriggers on rod holder mounts. When we go out to play lots of room. When fishing same thing.

Re: fishing and family boat

I had a bass boat for YEARS ... wife would only go out with me a couple times a year. Didn't like the littlest aspeck in it, etc. Last year I picked up a '99 Renkin SeaMaster dual console similar to Apache's Trophy for $5800. Wife couldn't get enough of going to the lake in that, which meant my amount of fishing and water time increased!

My dual console has an electric trolling motor in front, a 7.5 kicker in the rear, live well, ice cooler, front pedistal seat (aftermarket addition). It was the best boating purchase I made since getting married. The bass boat was great in single life ... but with a family the dual console made a lot of sense for me!

Don't totally agree with ' not a good fishing boat", maybe not the best, but a very good compromise for both use...

And wife & Daughter appreciate the little bit of extra "comfort" compare to a CC
