Had the carb rebuilt on this motor. The engine still bogs down when advancing the throttle. Once it catches itself you can open the throttle up and the engine runs fine wide open. What is worse, when idling for a long distance the engine gets too much fuel and quits. Then it won't start. Another thing I noticed a couple times is the bulb on the fuel line gets rock hard. Fuel line and tank replaced last year. ELectrical all checks out perfect so it does not appear to be lack of fire. Any suggestions?

For the bogging, open (richen) the carb 1/8 to 1/4 turn... For the hard fuel primer, rebuild the fuel pump. Or if it's an aftermarket primer, replace with genuine. I have seen a lot of aftermarket primers drop one of the check valves and it ended up back in its place, but backwards... Primer got hard, but wouldn't allow fuel flow. You do have the vent on the fuel tank open, don't you?

Fuel pump is new and the carb rebuilt. The fuel line including the bulb are from Mercury and bought new last year along with the tank. Engine is getting too much fuel at idle and low end.

Only thing left is to conclude that the float level is too high, or the float is sinking, or the needle valve is leaking....

Here is the apparent solution. The ball in the ball/seat/choke plunger assembly is not staying seated. As such fuel is just dumping. Cleaned it all out and stretched the spring a little bit to keep the ball seated. So far it has cured the flooding problem.

Still, you may have a problem in the carb. A primer buld alone usually does'nt cause that series of problems. Take the hour and take the carb off, take it apart carefully and look at the fuel pump, make sure its soft and intact. Look at the inlet needle and make sure the tip is a perfect cone, not worn and check the foat. Just to make sure your carb is good to go. Put it all back together and see how it does.

Carb completely rebuilt including a new fuel pump. The ball and seat valve seems to have been the problem.
