Or is it part of the first one, I found this in the lower case right at the front next to the shift shaft, what is it this time?
there was a black rubber bush around the shaft but sitting outside on top of the impellar housing, is it supposed to be in the recess of the housing around the shaft? also the little chamber where the shift shaft is was completely full of crud, I cleaned it out and my question is,
the water wont drain out of the chamber so I poked about in the bottom with a thin welding rod it went in a few inches and stopped, should i poke harder? is the little drain hole down below to drain this chamber?
thanks for your help, Bill

No idea, the photo is badly out of focus.

Thick black rubber ring around the shaft should be on top of the water pump housing. Look at your service manual....

Poke harder... That chamber needs to be CLEAR or the housing will crack, and you can drill the drain hole out to 1/4", it helps the chamber stay clean...

Are we talking about the same chamber?

I'm talking about the water drain chamber forward of the shift shaft in the lower unit. I always drill the drain hole out to 1/4", they don't block up at 1/4".

yes we are talking about the same drain hole, and i am refering to the little chamber that has the shift shaft in it, do you mean drill out the drain hole at the bottom as per your pic, or do you mean drill down from above through the chamber, how does so much crap accumalate in there where does it get in?

Re: Another mystery??

Drill the drain hole, then use anything that will fit to clear out the crap. Air is very useful (cover your face!).

I

I drilled out and got the air line on to the hole,
I did get a few bubbles come up to the chamber but no joy the water remains in the chamber and not a drop coming out of the drain hole? should i be able to get a piece of wire all the way down to the drain hole?
does it go in a straight line down? when I poke it down it seems to hit something solid after 3"
baffeled now

Then the crap is caked more solid then we expected.

See answer above... Just keep digging. I've had them so solid that I needed a masonry drill bit to break it up.

I believe the part in your hand is another part of your exhaust water shutter, It should be the arm to help hold onto the rubber part of the shutter, See number 7 in this link.

Yes I concur with you on that, thank you for taking time to reply, now I have the loose mounting and the new shutter on the way over the pond,
I see the remaining mount for the shutter is pop riveted onto the exhaust pipe/tube, ie.are the rivets a special type ie aluminum or stainless mixed with some other metal?

Here is the update,
once you informed me the hole was straight down I made the modification to the drain hole outlet, then I got a piece of 1/8 brazing rod and flattened the end a bit and used it gently in the battery drill on slow speed, worked a treat!
After that I gave it a few blasts with the airline poured the kettle down, and hey presto! its producing water faster than me after a gallon of Fosters!
Excellent modification and very accurate advice, thanks so much for your help and guidance, it is greatly apreciated, Bill
