Hello, this is my first post. I have been reading post on this forum for some time and wanted to share my 1969 Starcraft Jet, 1970 Mercury 500 and 1971 Mercury 40. I had to replace all the wood in the boat. New paint and seats and a lot of work on both outboard engines. Just wanted to say that I have learned a lot about restoring a boat in this forum and want to thank all of the posters. I really love the Starcraft and the way it handles on the water.

Re: First post

Great looking boat and Welcome. I really like the red on the topside. I have been thinking of painting my topside red too but I am kinda worried about how hot it would get. Does yours get too hot to handle? It sure does look clean, do you fish out of it or cruise? I agree with Kev, would have been nice to follow the resto, maybe you have pics you could post. You have a 50hp & a 40hp? uhh, why? Dale

Re: First post

I want to thank every one for the kind remarks about the boat. I got the Starcraft off Craigslist in July 2008, and was assured that it was ready for the water. Had to leave the boat on the freeway with a blow out with no spare on the way home, and it went down hill from there. The floor was held together only by the carpet and the transom by huge amounts of silicone. I started looking for help and found this site. I would go here with each new problem that I had. I would find out how others had done a certain repair and copy cat. I had owned a lot of boats before, but never did a restore. I took a lot of pictures of the repairs but really did not think to post them, not sure why. The red topside paint was my wife's idea, it was a faded sea mist green when I got the boat, but I really like the red now. I kept the interior a light sand color to keep it cool, don't have any problems with the deck getting hot as no one is out on it. Sorry that I was not clear on the engines, the main is a 1970 Merc 500 50hp and the kicker is a 1971 Merc 40 4hp with 3 blade prop. Had to completely rebuild the lower unit on the 50hp new wiring, fuel lines, paint, decals and striping We fish, troll, and pull tubes, and find this boat can do it all. The Merc 4hp is tied-ed to the Merc 50hp with a removable rod, so I can steer with the wheel. The 4hp gives good control with the three blade prop. Posting a few more pictures that shows the engines better.

Re: First post

Do you have some before pictures? That way we can appreciate all your hard work. The red is the bomb, love that color. I'm either going back to the original avocado on mine or maybe work some red into it.

Great looking rig, is it a 16 footer? Welcome to the "Brotherhood", you are among friends here.

CheapboatKev, your resto thread is great. It will be my reference point as I fix my boat up.

Re: First post

Thanks, again for the kind remarks about the boat. The little Merc 4hp is a bit of over kill on a 15' boat, but I find that I use it quiet a lot. I had an old Renken boat that a fellow wanted and he had the 1971 Merc 40. We did some trading and I ended up with the engine. I just used the electric trolling motor before I got the kicker engine, but I use the little 4hp when we just want to slow cruise up and down the river. I did not have a gps last summer, have one now so I will be able to determine the boat speed with the Merc 50hp, but it does push the boat quite well. The Starcraft Jet is rated for 50hp max and at 15' the Merc 500 is perfect for the boat. I would like to have a CMC power tilt unit on the boat some day. I would think that 80 Merc on your 16' Huron Angler would really fly. I have been looking for my restore pictures but have not located them yet, will keep looking.
