I will be removing my lower unit and was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to make sure the bolts do not break in the housing.

For instance: heat the bolt a little before removal

What has worked is what I am wondering.

Beacuse, been there, done that broken bolt removal nightmare.

Thanks,

Re: Removing Lower Unit

I am also soon going to remouve lower unit.(when all this damm snow melts) Have 1998 c75 yami and don't know much about it's history other than the fact it was run in salt water. I hear ya about broken bolts and hope to avoid that also. Lots of info on site but when it comes to condition of bolts it depends on length of time since last maintenance. Hopefully your bolts were dabbed with a non metalic grease and wil pop right off. Good Luck

Re: Removing Lower Unit

I'm not a big fan of breaking out the torch if I can help it. I've opened up lots of lower units and most all were salt water units. The best ever penetrating oil that I have found is Aerokroil by Kano labs. It was suggested here and was bought on line.
Yeah, you have to break the bolts loose enough to get it to start up the threads, but I have always backed out a couple turns, wet it and tightened back up..letting the kroil get as far up the hole as possible. good luck! :)
