Re: over powered boat.

EDIT Then put a smaller cowling or numbers on the cowling to get away with more. LMAO My theory is put the maximum reasonable power for your boat. For instance, if your motor is a inline 3 cylinder and the manufacture you prefer has a Hp range from 55 to 75 horse power. then you should put the 75 horse motor on. More power same weight. I do not agree with putting a 250 Hp V6 on your boat cause the sheer weight would sink it. Well maybe not but its not safe mainly cause of the way your boat floats. I just sold a boat that was rated for 150 hp It had a 200hp V6 25 insh shaft on it, the boat was designed for a 20 inch shaft. It worked fine but I had to modify the transom with some SS sheet metal to keep little waves fom coming over the back also had to leave the little plugs in the top of the transom to keep the water out. also extra caution had to be used when launching the boat. How does you boat float? How much if any water get in while launching? Happy Boating!!

Re: over powered boat.

Same thing happened to me. My boat has a 90 but it's rated for 75. It operates and floats fine so I'm not going to worry about it.

Re: over powered boat.

Depends on your state regulations, it is illegal in Wisconsin.

But chances of being caught are very slim.

I'm sure someone will bring up the insurance issue, so check with your agent.

Let me know if you need to sell that motor. :)

wouldn't worry about it. Have been check many times by the DNR and never have they looked at HP rating. Had a 17ft checkmate rated at 125HP had a 140 Johnson on it and was checked several times all they wanted to see was PFD's, throwable cushion, fire extingisher and to make sure we weren't drinking, Never do on the lake too many others that are and you have to watch out for.

Re: over powered boat.

This one was rated for 35-40 and has a 125 on it. "Too much horsepower is never enough."

Re: over powered boat.

Since I cant say what I have Found out one here due to unverified editing Go to your local parks and wildlife office or where you get your title changed and tags renewed and check with them. Yes insurance does play a factor but I had My boat insured (before you edit this is verified) 1984 wellcraft rated at 150 hp by the US Coast guard, and a 1982 200Hp Evinrude Rated By the Manufacture and Geico insured it.

Re: over powered boat.

You might have trouble when you go to insure it but I seriously doubt you'll have trouble with the game warden. Isn't that coast guard sticker just a recommendation anyway?
