idle adjustment question

i finally completed all the maintenance items to the engine..

turned it on with the key and she started right up with no problems. but when it did start, the idle speed was way too high.

after staring at the levers and screws, i decided to turn the black knob (#1). after that the idle went even higher so i turned it the other way but that didn't make it go down at all.

i found out that the very top lever (#2) controlled the idle. i turned the screw (#3) to back out the lever (#2). after i did that, the engine did not want to start at all. i tried to place everything back like it was but it still did not want to turn on. i didn't know what to do anymore. finally, i figured that if i held the top lever (#2) back a little the engine would start. i think the lever is too far forward and it floods the engine and will not let it start.

the lever (#2) if left alone tends to move forward and brings the idle way up.

PLEASE HELP. i need to lower the idle. how do i do that? how do i get the lever to stay back?

Re: idle adjustment question

service manual would help also, since you know nothing about the motor. outboardbooks.com.

actually sounds like an improper cable adjustment problem.

Hmmmm..............

You need to remove the throttle cable from the equation. detach it from the throttle lever on the engine.

Place the engine in neutral, pull the throttle lever on the controls all the way back to slow speed.

Restart the engine and adjust #3 screw until you achieve the idle speed you want. *Also, if you can remember, return #2 screw to where you originally found it.*

Final step is to adjust the cable so that it EASILY installs back onto the motor. Fisrt attach the cable end onto the lever, then rotate the threaded adjuster so that slides into the retaining groove it fits in. Tighten holding bolt.

Check idle speed. Don't go any further until you get a manual.

Re: idle adjustment question

Well, didn't mess around with it any more untill I placed the motor in a drum full of water. The first time I ran it, I had it on some ear muffs and I read some where that placing it in water would bring the idle down because of the restriction on the muffler.

Please follow the link below and advise me if the idle is too high. The motor starts right up with no problems.

Sorry about the silliness in the beginning. I was just too excited about being able to turn it on. I've done quite a bit of work on it and it felt pretty good seeing it run. My wife was recording...just an fyi...

Re: idle adjustment question

First thing to do is to synchronize the carburetors so that the throttle plates are all fully closed when the throttle is in the idle position and horizontal when at WOT. This is done with the cable disconnected.

When you have the carburetors perfectly synchronized throughout their range of motion, adjust the cable to the shift lever and then reattach it.
