Johnson 50 VRO unknown model and alarm issue

I have recently purchased a 1990 key west with a 50 hp VRO Johnson. We hauled it home and the shock assist was frozen so i had to remove it. We took it out for a spin on flathead lake and the warning horn went off when we increased our RPM's. the VRO has been disconnected properly and i am mixing my gas. The beep goes off after about 1 to 2 minutes of high RPM's If i cut the throttle back to about half it goes away. it?s not the overheat alarm and it is pumping good water. it is a fast Beep-Beep-Beep which as i understand should be the VRO warning. Any ideas? Please help. I am also in a position of not knowing the year or model number because someone scratched it off. On the back of the motor i have a (G2321143) but no model number (J50.........?) anywhere on the engine. Any ideas? Can i use this Outboard without the shock assist? I know i have a lot of questions here but there must be an expert out there somewhere. Thank you for your help.

Well i don?t think it was stolen, the model has just been scratched off. It still has some identification #'s on the engine

I am pretty sure that this johnson 50 vro was original to this boat. the boat has only had two owners before me. I just think it is highly unlikely that the engine is stolen

Check your post on the 70 HP thread, I posted a photo of control, and replyed to post. If the engine has VRO, it is 1985 and up. You can get closer to year by ignition system. later models had power pack under flywheel.

Thank you. Any idea what the alarm is all about? it just seems way to consistent to be faulty wiring and the VRO is disconnected correctly.

Disconnect tan wire from temp sensor on cylinder head, run engine, you still have alarm. Replace the alarm horn.

This is what I would do. Remove the horn from the control box. Cut, splice, extend or what ever it takes to route the wires that control the horn outside the control box. Locate horn under dash of boat. After VRO delete this engine only has overheat alarm. Cheap horn from radio shack works fine. If you want the self test of horn, install push button switch on ground side of horn. Key on push button to test. You want red light small red LED spliced into system. So key on, push button will test horn and light, Test harness wire Key on , ground tan wire at temp sensor, should have red light an horn. The wire colors are TAN, sensor, BLACK, ground, PURPLE, hot with key on. You may like this after you price the OEM horn.
