Can I use the dust that I have collected from sanders as the thickining agent or so I need to buy it. The only problem that I could for see is that there is laquer dust mixed in with it. hmmm could the resin or the hardner be thrown off by the laquer dust? or worse create some kind of chemical reaction

I have used saw dust as a filler with epoxy resin never any probs, Not sure about the laquer you could do a tester but I don't think it will be a prob. You might not get as good a finish as you would with microspheres filler but you can mach up the colours better when you use the dust from the wood your gluing.

Good idea but it will not hold in vertical filets, cabosil makes the resin more like a gel mayonaise that will not run.

For strength you can chop some glass mat with scissors and add to the mix or just use your dust.

The real strength should come from the glassing you lay over the filet'd joint, the filet is there to round the sharp corner off, glass doesn't like sharp turns and will usually pop out before it cures.

In a perfect 90 deg inside corner I have stuck a peice of tri stock wood and then just glassed over that, the idea is to just eliminate the sharp inside corner for the glass to transition from one surface to the other.

If you use self generated sawdust, make sure it's sifted to take out any foreign material (or larger wood bits) and make sure it's as dry as possible, dust dry if you can.

It's free, but personally I'd only use it in an emergency. For filleting joints I mix up either wood flour and epoxy or milled fibers with cabosil or phenolic microbubbles (the red powder). Milled fibers are the compacted white powder by the way, they're ground up glass.

Either of these makes a nice smooth putty for filleting.

By the way, did you know most people make fillets much larger than they need to be? Big waste of resin and putty.

thank jonesg I havent thought about tri stock. eric that is one of the reasons that I am asking its free. I am in the process of budgeting for a floor and stringer and maby transom rebuild on my boat just trying to gather the necessary info on where i can cut cost without skimping on integrity.

Yes. It also works beautifully if you glass when the putty is still wet. :)
