VRO Yes or No??

Hi Everyone,
Tough problem on my hands:
I have a 16' Invader Bowrider (Boat is Mint) powered by a 90HP Johnson
Model # J90ELECM
Purchased this boat late last summer and moved it into a Marina slip close to home.
The Marina Mechanic suggessted I disconnect the VRO and pre-mix my fuel - reason - he was considering the age of the motor and said the normal life exp. is about 10 years on the VRO unit and by pre-mixing my fuel I would be worry free.
I had him disconnect it.
He winterized the Boat and then retired from the Marina. This spring I brought the boat home and last week took it in to prep it for this season - new Champ Plugs etc.
The mechanic chastized me for disconnecting the VRO and said I ruined the existing VRO by doing so. He said I should not run this engine without the VRO hooked up.
Now I'm really confused and upset - Price for a new VRO + Lab = $800.00
While I was there he tank ran the engine for a few minutes and the low oil alarm started beeping - is there another sensor alarm that I should have had disconnected when the 1st Mech disc. the VRO??

Who is right?? Will I ruin this engine (less than 300 hours on it) with the VRO disconnected?? I am so confused - frustrated would be a better word.
Any help advice would be most appreciated.
Susan (HarryBedari is my cats name...lol)

If the VRO is disconnected and you are running 50:1 in the gas it will not ruin the engine, what it will do is assure you that you always have oil in the gas, just don't forget to add oil.

No problem with premixing at 50 to 1. Save the $800
The beeping is most likely because the alarm was not disconnected correctly. Was the oil side of the pump blocked off ???

Thxs for the response.

So after lookin at the manual, am I correct to assume that the fuel side of the VRO will function properly with the way its set up currently? Anything I should know - like fuel filter or??

Why did the low oil alarm start beeping - Is there a wire the 1st Mech. did not cut/remove?
This new mechanic wasn't too info giving - his answer was just replace with a new unit or you'll be replacing the motor.

Since I'm originally from Windsor (born there) swam as a kid at the beach in Belle River - and now stuck up here on Simcoe - I'm thinkin about haulin this boat down to ya.....lol

I'm headin outside to check the wiring harness to see if the wires have been all disconnected.

I'll wait to see if there's any issues with the intake fuel side that I should be aware of by leavin the VRO disconnected.

Should I try another shop/mechanic?

If anyone has any other potential or future issues please post so I know what to do now to prevent problems this summer.

Thanks everyone for takin the time,

Susan

Bring it on over !!! we will fix it up for you. How long a drive is that ??
So you are originally a Windsorite eh !!......and swam at Belle River beach !!!
How long have you been in Simcoe ??? ever get back to Windsor ??
Belle River has not changed much. The beer store got a lot busier though about 11 years ago when I moved here.
I would certainly get another mechanic's opinion and preferably one that will give you proper help and advice, not just wanting to take your hard earned cash for no reason.

How do I post a Pic without a link to photbucket?

Susan

Best if you read up on this link and ask from there if you are still unsure.

You can also click on the "manage attachments" and select the photos from your computer. Only issue with that is that you have to resize them to stay within the upload limits.
