Hi,

I just inherited my great uncle's speedboat. It has a 1962 Evinrude Starflite IV motor with the Selectric Shift. The model code is 50930A. I'm not sure what the A stands for. If I get a repair manual for the 50930 model will it be applicable to my 50930A motor?

I'm in Australia and I'm not really keen on ordering a repair manual from the USA. Does anyone have one that I can download or have emailed to me?

Does anyone know where I can get carb/fuel pump rebuild kits/spare parts? Is there an online store somewhere or is it all through Evinrude dealers?

Thanks for your help,

Jack.

UPDATE.

Well I have a repair manual now and I have replaced the gear case lube, pulled the carburettor apart and cleaned it, inspected the plugs and put some oil down the bores and cleaned the contacts on the ignition.

With the help of dad and my uncle we got the engine started. Under the pressure of the hose with the water attachment there is a bit of a mist coming out of the tell-tale. This is at idle speed.

We gave the boat a short run on the water and there was a small amount of water coming out of the tell-tale but it definitely wasn't like a hose. Maybe just a small dribble. We didn't run it for long and when we got the boat out I checked the plugs and they looked fine. The engine didn't feel or smell hot.

I'm not sure but I think the impeller might be stuffed. I'm ordering a new one from the iboats store right now.
What else will I need to order to replace the impeller?
How much water is normally sprayed out of the tell-tale at idle?/under load?
Does anyone know the operating water temp/cylinder head temp of these engines?
Where would be the best place to connect a temperature sender? (I have read that the number 1 cylinder always gets hot first).

Also when we ran the boat under load I noticed a white smoke. We didn't run the engine long enough to determine whether the smoke was under acceleration or decceleration. It may have just been steam. What are your experiences with these engines?

Finally, when the boat was idling at the boat ramp. There seemed to be a ****load of fuel sitting on the water around the back of the boat. After a minute idling, the whole boat ramp had been covered in a rainbow coloured oil slick. We were running the engine at 20:1 premix ratio and the water choke was working fine. (I turned it to manual off before we ran the boat just to be sure.) The plugs looked perfect after a run, do the old engines always pollute this much?

Oh and do you have to engage neutral each time between forward and reverse or can you just go straight from forward to reverse?

I am ordering a fuel pump kit, needle and seat(not yet needed but it's cheap and might be helpful), impeller and lower gear case seal kit.
I'm not getting a carby kit because they are $51 and it is just gaskets and O-rings anyway.
Is there anything else you guys think I should be getting?

I couldn't find any propellor seals. Does anyone know where I can buy them?

Thanks for all your help. iboats forum rocks!

the "A" is just a factory run designator and really means nothing. There may be one part on a few models that slightly changed from an A run to a C run, but that is it. The same repair manual is used for every run.

I believe our own iboats store ships internationally. Call or e-mail to make sure.

Hey Jack, just replying in your motor thread instead of the resto.

Those impellers when they get old almost get too soft I guess would be the best way to put it, eventually the ends can break off, get sucked into the engine, get stuck, so something you dont want to happen.

You need to understand the cooling system in that motor. It is a thermostatically controlled recirculating cooling system. When the motor is at less than thermostat opening temperature, the water is directed back to the water pump and is recirculated until it is warm enough to open the thermostat. During the recirculating phase, a bit of water blows out the exhaust relief as a tell-tale to show that it is working. Once the motor is at full operating temperature, the thermostat opens and the water is discharged and replaced by cool sea water. During this phase, there will be a heavier spray out the relief---but never a "hose" stream.

It must be understood that the thermostat is continually sampling the water and opening and closing as necessary to maintain the proper temperature. That means the spray out the rear is continually varying between a fine spray to a heavy spray. At idle speeds, there is not much heat being developed, so the spray will usually be slight at idle because it is in recirculating mode.

It must also be understood that you CANNOT test a water pump by running the motor on a hose.

It is a two-stroke engine and it is supposed to smoke!!! And it WILL discharge oil!!!

You do not have to press neutral to go from one gear to the other. Push the buttons in whatever order you want.

That motor does NOT support an alternator-driven tachometer, nor do I think you have one. It should be getting its signal from the ignition coil.

Your ammeter seems to be reading normal, so the Unicharger is probably fine.

The thing for driving the speedometer is called a pitot. They are notorious for getting plugged up or obstructed by floating weeds and stuff. In other words, they rarely work.

Lesse, does that about cover the questions?

Yes that answers my questions F_R.

I'm currently waiting for parts to arrive so the impeller and everything will be replaced anyway.

The repair manual I have for the motor does not discuss the thermostat at all. Do you know what temperature they open and close at? If I know this then I can take it out and test if it's working.

Do you guys think it is worth installing a dedicated tell-tale? One that taps into the no.1 cylinder water jacket and pees like a hose. There is a guide on here detailing how to do it.

I know 2-strokes smoke and pollute but this one seems excessive. I race karts and the blow blue smoke when they are cold or running rich. The boat was intermittently blowing white smoke. This is why I was confused.

Even though I can go straight from forward to reverse, is it easier on the gearbox to go through neutral first? What is the best option> Forward to Reverse or Forward to Neutral to Reverse?

I don't think the tacho is getting it's signal from the coil. I'll go have a look at it soon and get back to you.

Thanks for your help.

Re: 1962 Evinrude Starflite IV 75HP- HELP AND ADVICE NEEDED

We were running the engine at 20:1 premix ratio /QUOTE]

I think you are running too much oil through your engine. Check out Chinewalker's thread from the FAQ's about fuel/oil ratios at the link below and see what you think. Good luck!

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158072

FYI, I had a 1962 Johnson 75 that had been abused when I got it. After a little manual reading, TLC, and PM; I ran it for ten more years at 50:1.

Chinewalker suggests 24:1 which was pretty much what I was running anyway. What is the downside to running too much oil?

Chinewalker also says it is OK to run 40:1 mix for OMC 18HP and higher models from 1960-64. That's half as much as you are currently using. In addition to that oil sheen on the water, one long-term effect of too much oil is carbon build-up on the piston rings, cylinder heads and exhaust ports. Good luck!

I'd run 24:1 and use TC-W3 oil. Thermostat should open between 140-150F.

Re: Evinrude Starflite IV 75HP

Hey Jack!
I just posted in your restore. Not sure if your still following this but I have a complete engine for parts (1962 IV w/title). EVERYTHING IS THERE! It may run but I dont have the time or even a boat to bother with it right now. Parts for these are not cheap, as you probably already know! Some/most parts have been discontinued. The thing I love the most about this engine is the belt driven distributor. I have two original props! One is used and the other looks as though it was never installed! Both are in mint condition (besides a little chipped paint).
If you lived in the US, I could ship you the entire engine. Everthing in the engine looks good! Good compression, turns very easy by hand. I was trying to find a second engine for parts, but nothing local. I have the complete OEM part numbers list w/full detailed pics if you dont have it already.
I will part out if you want to have some spare parts! You can never have to many lying around.....

Sorry to bring up a 10 year old thread but I just bought a 1962 dorsett el Dorado with a 75hp evinrude starflite iv same model number as OP and I am trying to find a carburetor rebuild kit for it and am having a hard time as this is my first boat and first time working on something with a carburetor I've worked on plenty of cars and am pretty mechanically inclined so I feel like its something I am capable of if I find parts and diagrams for it also does anyone have a wiring diagram for the ignition switch on these thanks for any and all help

Really need to start a new thread for this project.----I think there is lots of inspection to do before you need a carburetor kit !!
