its the selctro shift I know you need to put power to what the purple wire? want to check comp

That's a hydro-electric shift. Without the motor running it'll be in forward gear no matter what wires have power. For neutral you'll have power to one of the wires going to the gearcase (don't remember the color) and for reverse you'll need power to both wires. No power to either wire is forward. As the flywheel spins over it'll go into neutral (in theory).

To check compression on those motors it's safest to remove the prop. Put the selector in neutral and check compression as usual.

You are only trying to crank it to check compression? Simply use a short wire to jump from the starter solenoid's big battery terminal to the little terminal---the one that is NOT grounded through a safety switch. Jumping to the wrong small terminal will destroy the safety switch.

Needless to say, the battery cables must be hooked up.
