just got the 66 lark going good,,great at high and mid speed,,wants to chug off at low rpm,,,i think i have to mess with the low speed needle valve some more,,,this guy i got it from said he rebuilt the carb,,,when i looked in it,there were gaskets rotting inside, and the float wasnt even hooked up,,no wonder it poured gas out of the carb after i got the new ign set in it and started it up,,runs really good now tho,,, ,where the heck would be some good places to look for an old pressurized tank? the one i have is in great shape, not even scratched, new looking and shiny inside,,,now i know it will be hard to find one in this good of shape, but generally how hard is it to find one of these in good shape?i would like to have an extra,,,,, also,i used about 2 and a half gal of fuel in an hour, running 3/4 throttle,,,is that normal and ok?

Re: looking for pressurized fuel tank

A 40 HP will use about 4 gallons/hour at wide open throttle (WOT), so 2.5 gallons/hr at cruise is pretty good.

66 lark doesn't use a pressure tank, doesn't it have a single line non pressure tank?

Re: looking for pressurized fuel tank

Correct, no pressure tank needed, just a regular single line will do. Walmart sells them, just make sure you get the good OMC fittings for the line if you are doing the line and tank, the cheapo chinese one's kinda suck.

You are right, but either this is not a 66 or somebody changed it to the old system because he had an itch to do so.
My suspicion is that somebody here is a bit confused about metal tanks and thinks that they are all pressurized system tanks.

Re: looking for pressurized fuel tank

yeah,i did think that since it was a metal tank,i had a pressurized sys,but wondered why it had a fuel pump on it too,,,this is my first boat and first evinrude,so that should explain my confusion,,,learned alot so far,esp from all you guys on here,,,lot easier to sit on my wallet now as its thinner,$800 in all with the new points coils/cond,water pump floor patch, learned that too,,but def found my new hobby,,i enjoyed fixin this thing up almost as much as riding it,i will try to get some pics up soon,,really glad to know i can use a reg tank tho,,thanks guys

Just wait till the "small outboard motor" bug kicks in, you'll be at a garage sale and see a nice johnson 5.5 sitting in the corner with $15 on it, next thing you know you are out hunting for more and more, your kids know what year and model they are by the colour of the cowl cause you've brainwashed them too, it's a scary hobby LOL. $800, you got off lucky.

Re: looking for pressurized fuel tank

heck yeah zephyr, free is in my price range also,,,,,i already am looking at the little tiller mojos, they look cool and retro,,,,saw your video, king, the smokey viking,,,it seemed reliable,,,i can see myself hooked on those little motors, just to hear them run again after their long barn stay,i can see where it gets alot easier once you have a few under your belt,,,,looks like you have a nice collection,,,youre right,,if i see an old one for cheap,i will definitely jump on it and let the tinkering commence,,did feel like a dummy bout my tank tho,,i knew it had to have a double line, just being a dingleberry and not thinking, even read in the book that they were mostly for pre 50 models,,,still learning but liking

Re: looking for pressurized fuel tank

Actually mostly 50's too, 2 of my motors are pressure tanks. Don't know how reliable the Viking is, that startup was the first time it's ran in over 20 years, I'm getting a 14ft Crestliner and will use it to troll, guess that will be the real test. It's essentially OMC under the flywheel so parts are easy, it's got that rotor pump so my concern is with cooling, I have the take some temp readings with the cowl off to make sure it's cooling properly.

Re: looking for pressurized fuel tank

Oh yea, BK knows about my last few motor stories.:D:D

Like the $50 JW-14 that ended me up with an Aluminum boat and two motors.
I sold the aluminum boat with the 7.5hp Sea King on it last week and got $450 cash for it. I still kept the 1962 5.5hp Fisherman and it's getting a rebuilt lower unit put back on this week.:D

How about the old '57 18hp I paid $40 for and found a brand new ignition system under the flywheel? It was stuck when I brought it home, but now is runnin like a champ and has 100psi (with pull rope) on each cylinder. I posted a want ad on Craigslist and got a good working pressure tank for $10 and got a new swivel tube for $20:D

Last October, I was given a 1957 P-14 boat with a 1986 25hp Evinrude and a 1974 6hp Johnson. Both motors are like new mechanically and cosmetically. I sold the boat to a couple guys down at the coast.

I always loved tinkering with these old motors, because it's relatively cheap to do a complete restore and it's easier on your back (and your wallet) than old cars are. Several years back, I completely tore down a 1956 5.5hp Fisherman and a 1947 Zephyr and restored them to brand new condition. The zephyr in my avitar was also my first restoration job and owned it for 17 years, before I sold it to another collector. My 1957 18hp will be my next restore project.

Your 66 Lark will make a great restore job too. Those are great motors and pretty bulletproof. Very easy to find parts for and to keep runnin.

Re: looking for pressurized fuel tank

it was crazy,i saw the boat in the glassmaster section on here, about midway thru the pages of paralaxbill,,vrmgirl posted it in 08,,,they had my boat since 2001 and her hubby dad owned it for 15 years, then his brother had bought the thing new in 69 with a 66 lark on it,,,she said he had ridden it two times and it was never in the water again till supposedly the guy i bought it from tried it out,,tried to fix it and gave up,i gave him 600 for it and put about 200 so far with that,,so it has litterally been sitting for 40yrs,,,,inside motor was very very clean and new looking,,,flywheel and starter gears look hardly used,,,,i put all new firing and rebuilt the carb,,gaskets in it were rotten,,got to get it sycro now,,started a new thread on it,,just worried about those old seals,,top looked good when i had the armature plate off,gen belt was too dry,i broke it putting it back on,,yeah another 62 bucks,,,i really love this old boat tho

Re: looking for pressurized fuel tank

Ya that was the deal of the century, i'm still looking for it. Last one I got for $50 was the 5.5 Johnson, missing the starter, not locked up and has spark after a quick clean and adjust, that one is for my boy.
