Hub seal problem

This is on a old Shorelandr trailer, 545 5 lug hub. I have replaced the seals, bearings races twice in the last 4 yrs. both times the seal on the inside isn't tight enough. 2 yrs. ago I replace them using a local bearing supplier and we both measured the hub bore as well as the old seal. But when I installed it the seal pressed in too easily so I was skeptical from the start. I even used RTV blue gasket on the edge of the seal. When I removed the hub today to inspect, the seal and inner bearing stayed on the spindle and the hub and the rest came off. Water had intruded and corrosion was forming on the bearing and races.

I am using LM 67948 bearing outer side and LM11949 on the inner. The seal is National 203013 but should be Chicago Rawhide 14977, OD 2.328, ID 1.5 which we cannot find.

My question is should I keep trying to play around with these seals or bite the bullet and replace the whole hub kit, bearings, races, seals and start over?

Thanks.

Re: Hub seal problem

Have you tried your local Napa Auto parts store? They may be able to cross it for you or provide one based on your measurements.

I tried NAPA before trying the local bearing supplier, but the seal NAPA had was a single lip, type no good.

Re: Hub seal problem

The problem is the hub bore measures 2.323 (with multiple measurements yielding 2.334 and 2.333) so the seal outer diameter is always too small. The seal I used measures 2.324 OD and you would think it would be tight enough but no good.

I can get a bearing kit from Champion but again the OD of the seal is 2.33 and I am not sure that would be snug enough either. I wonder if the hub bore has been machined or maybe just touched up with emory cloth enough that I can't get the right fit? I even tried RTV sealant on it last time I changed bearings and seal but that did not work either.

The spindle being 1.25x 0.75 taper makes it slightly odd too, or else I would just buy a whole new hub kit with the seals and all included. Any other ideas???

Re: Hub seal problem

I decided to buy the hub kits and will install this weekend. They came with the larger I.D. seal but I just purchased the correct ones for my spindle from the company as an extra set so it should be good. Will let you know how it turns out.

Re: Hub seal problem

I replaced the old hubs with new hub kits, included seals, races, bearings and dust cover.
Had to get different seals though, the kit came with the larger inner dia. and I needed the smaller so it was simple to just replace those. Went together fine and I am confident in the bearing assembly now on both sides.
