Hey guys

i have serviced my engine this year for the first time myself. Its a 4.3ltr v6 carbureted 2005 mercruiser.

Changed oils, filters impeller. And fired her back up, and all is well but i notice oil running down the side of the oil filter. I check the tightness it was on pretty tight so i give it an extra 1/4turn and its as tight as it goes. And when i fired back up the oil was still running down the side of the filter, all bit alot less than before.

I replaced with genuine quicksilver filter, which had the seal already on it, i coated this seal with some a fine line of oil when i was installing it.

Is there another seal i have missed ?

Also as the filter sits at the bottom, am i going to have to pump all the oil out again if i want to remove this, as it will run out when i remove the filter ?

Any ideas on why else it would be leaking ?

This might sound dumb but did the old seal come off with the filter.

When you removed the old filter sis the entire gasket come with it or did some stick to the block?

Sounds like the double gasket leak syndrome.
Did you make sure the gasket from the old filter didn't stick the the housing?
If not, pull the new filter off now and check. if there are 2 seals, throw them both away and put a new filter on. DO NOT overtighte, or you will never get it off the next time. You only need engine oil for the gasket, nothing special, no fine reel oil or grease of any kind, even some old oil will work.

And don't ever over tighten your oil filter, it should be hand tight per the instructions on the filter or you will end up doing what I did when I imported my boat into Australia, it took over 20 hours to remove it

No you do not need to remove the new oil out of the oil pan to R & R the oil filter.;):)

It will be messy but you will only lose about a half a quart when you take the filter off.
Wipe it all down and make sure the old gasket is not stuck to the motor.

I have had a defective filter leak new out of the box.

Yep make sure you see the old seal on the old filter...then do as I do...clean the mounting pad on the engine with a rag to make sure there's no dirt or crud on it...I use a mirror to check it then I lube the seal on the new filter with engine oil and put it on ONLY hand tight...if your hands slip you can take a piece of sandpaper...fold it so both sides have the rough side out and wrap it around the filter and then hand tighten...most say 3/4 to one turn after the gasket contacts the mounting pad on the engine.

Re: Leakage at Oil Filer

hi, guys thanks for all the really helpful replies.

It definatly not double gasketed and the old seal is on the filter that came off. And the seal is definatly intact on the new one as i distinctly remember coating this with oil whenever i was replacing it.

Currently it is very tight, in fact as tight it will go, i did this in an effort to try and stop the leak, it wasnt this tight at the start and the oil was flowing out of it more rapidly.

If i remove the filter, how much oil is going to come flowing out at me. Could i avoid this by draining the same amount via the dipstick ?

Thanks

Ayuh,... The Only oil you're dealing with is what's in the filter...
It's pumped into it from the base, so the oil level is irrevelant...

Taking oil out of the pan isn't going to affect the filter. You are going to get about a quart out of the filter. Crack the filter with a wrench or by hand, then use a plastic grocery bag and stick it around the filter, then you can use your hand around the bag to spin it off and catch 99% of the oil.

That's a cool trick... Any suggestion on one like this.????

Might try knocking a hole in the top of the filter and letting it drain for a while.

Hole on top won't drain it, but a hole in the side of it will :) That is assuming the filter isn't draining back to the sump on it's own.

I worked at a conversion van dealership 10+ years ago and they had these plastic license plates that they would attach to the bumpers with the dealers name on it. They were cheap enough that you could fold them in half and open them back up to form a V shaped trough, but not so cheap they would split. I should have stolen a box of those things because they were perfect for re-directing oil. I used to use them all the time.

Dalton565,

Could have just been bad out of the box, I've had it happen a number of times.

That's true, I had a Z-9 filter with a hole in the bottom out of the box. Took it back to the shop and he checked the others, a few were bad. He sent to whole lot back to the wholesaler.
