where to buy 3m 5200

bought some thrus night at lowes 9.87 a tube, dont think id use it like gluvit.

Depends where you live..I buy mine at either West Marine or Canadian Tire.

I couldn't find it when I was originally looking but now I seem to find it everywhere. I think I even saw it at Walmart once in the aisle that had boat stuff.

well canadian tire had the small tubes for $14 couldnt find it at home depot or wall mart. at ct it says the 4200 is the fast cure, from whet ive read on here the 5200 is supposed to be the fast cure and 4200 supposed to be the slow? also i seen some stuff called star brite aluminum putty, would this be good to fill screw holes in the transom or would jb weld be better?

I've seen it at home depot, sometimes Menards, and of course west marine.

5200 is the permanent stuff, 4200 is less permanent, fast cure 5200 is the fast curing stuff (obviously).

I get mine at Home Depot for about $8 a tube (the caulk tube size, not the squeeze tube).

Alternatively you can use PL Concrete crack and mortar sealer (this is NOT the same thing as the PL Premium adhesive). Other than the fact that it's a light gray color (concrete color) it's the same ingredients as 3m 5200, but since it doesn't have "marine" written on the package it's only about $3 a tube.

I've used it for a few years... once dry it's just as annoying and difficult to remove as 5200 is.

I've not seen anybody mention 3M 4000 any where. That is what I ended up with from special order Ace Hardware. The container says it is for marine use above and below waterline.

Great info Erik. I wish I'd known this when I was installing my deck. I wanted to add some kind of adhesive between the stringers and deck. I ended up using some Loc-tite brand stuff that HD had and I have no confidence in it. I couldn't find any 5200 at the time and would certainly have used the PL stuff you're talking about.

Yep, try it out. I just got done removing some from the last work I did on my stringers 2 years ago. I literally couldn't get it off, I had to either remove the fiberglass it was on or grind it off. It stays flexible when cured, sticks like heck, and doesn't shrink when curing. If you think about it it's made to do the same thing as 5200 in somewhat dirtier conditions.

Since it's chemically identical (almost) to 5200 it cures the same... underwater if needed, wetter conditions make a faster cure.

The only differences I can find at all are 1) The color.. comes in concrete gray and maybe a reddish? and 2) Shininess.. the surface is more off a matte gray than shiny like 5200.

Other than that, the stuff is a great 5200 replacement.

I have found Liquid Nails to be pretty darn brittle once it's dried. Not really much of a fan of it.

Yeah, liquid nails isn't very good as a sealant. It's similar to PL premium in uses, but it's even more inflexible when dried.

I did a bit of checking around my neck of the woods...

3M stuff no go at Home Depot, Lowes, Menard's, WalMart. But, 4200 and 5200 (smaller tubes) available at the local ACE. Just a heads up is all!
