What do you think?

I've been searching around for boats since my other project isn't going to happen, no title, OMC stringer drive. So this is what I found. It's a Starcraft Holiday 18 footer with 120 hp mercruiser i/o. It will probally need a new floor, stringers, transom the whole deal, it runs though. $700 and it's got a title! I plan on using the boat for mainly just cruising around some fishing and maybe some tubing if it can handel it. So what do you Starcraft experts think? Good deal?

Sorry for small resoloution pics I just got them off of craigslist.

Thanks, Matt

Boy that's a nice looking boat, and how can you wrong at $700.00. What shape is the motor in? Even with a new floor, flooring and seats you should only be into it for a couple grand.

Re: What do you think?

The boat ssat for 8 years. The guy said that he got it started last year cause he thought he was going to be able to use it. He drained the water out of the block and such so I'm not sure about that. When I go and check it out I'll see what it looks like.

As an 18' CB Holiday owner - I can only say "GET IT"!!!

If the drive train works $700 is a fantastic deal - you can upgrade the the interior at any speed - although I am sure the floor needs redo immediately - I bought marine plywood (to me marine plywood is the same cost as exterior plywood+resin coating - only no mess). Cost - 4 sheets at 60 bucks per.

Seats will cost $200-250 for back to back - available cheap at internet retail marine stores.

Get it! We need more closed bow holidays on the site!

Well I'm no I/O guy but I do LOVE my 18' SC hull! Sounds like a good deal to me. Even a full restore is not overly difficult on these. It's basically just a matter of how long you want it to last. You could do a fairly simple resto in a weekend or two.

Re: What do you think?

I'm definatally thinking of getting it. I'm not too worried about all the wood replacing, I just hope to have it out on the water by at least May and then this winter I can get things better. Seats on the other hand I might just make for now, you know temporary :D. I do kinda wish it was an outboard motor, but there haven't been any that have shown up around my area.

So the waiting for the reply begins.

Re: What do you think?

Make sure the motor and running gear checks out or the price you paid will seem like the cheap part of the boat. I also would prefer to have an OB version but as you know they are a rare bird. Check the front part of the keel, as damage here is harder to fix. Look for pitting in the hull. That would be a bad sign. If the hull is mint half the battle has been won. Good hunting. GLG

Well heres some comparisons for you.
Last year my 18 ft Holiday looked like THIS when I dragged her home..for 800 bux and the same motor you have, running.

Id say you are way ahead of the game!

I saw that rig on clist too. I think it would be a great project - shoot offer him $500 and see what happens! If you want an OB though, I'd say wait. One will pop up for sure, seems like I see them all the time in the 18' range. Have fun!

Thanks for the input everyone! I think I'm gonna go take a look at this one in the next couple of days. If an outboard one pops up I may lean towards that one. I'll keep everyone posted!

Re: What do you think?

I like it, of course I have one that's almost the same! Mine is an open bow but I like the closed bow too. I/O or outboard, think it over. There are advantages to both and I flip flop daily.

If I had an outboard I could be fishing now. With an I/O do I really want to put water in it and then have the temps drop on me. I am waiting now until more stable weather. My boat sits out in the open so if it's freezing out.....

If you are ok with an I/O then go for it. Are you ok with an I/o? Would an 18 1/2 foot hardtop with an outboard be better for you (I love those)? They pop up in Michigan and Ohio if you wait. Closed bow or open bow no difference to me. I/O or an outboard, you need to figure it out and for me it was a toughie.

I like it, winner, winner chicken dinner!

Matt..
I just picked up on the OMC outdrive...
Just a warning...parts are crazy hard to find, hardly ANY techs will touch them..Been out of business for many years (15+?)
Basically you will have to rely on the OMC gurus here on iboats..but will have to scavange parts all over the web I am sure...

Go to the Mercruiser/OMC I/O forum and search "OMC" and read some horror stories..And go into this with your eyes (and wallet) open.

Re: What do you think?

Kev you're reading it incorrectly. His current glass boat is an OMC. The SC is the same as yours....

We all misread things, I probally didn't word it in the best way either. Don't worry bout it. If I had known the "greatness" of the OMC before my first boat we wouldn't even have to worry about this :D. Did Starcraft even use OMC's? Sure doesn't seem like they would.

As for the boat. I may go and check it out this weekend otherwise it'll be a couple days after that, not quite sure when hopefully soon.

Re: What do you think?

I just realised it now that jasoutside's project boat had one to start with. Good thing that there doesn't seem to be too many around.

The funny thing though. I got an offer for my engine and outdrive for $200 :D not sure if I can actually get that for it but it'd be nice to have a bit more for the "new" boat.
