I know one thing i find this really interesting work thanks again.

Yes....

Try a Tandy or RS Components. Or any store that sells or repairs electronics.

It's 3 components, a diode, a capacitor and a resistor. Just make sure you get components that are rated higher than 400volts.

i went to my friends to make one tonight but he didnt have a capacitor rated for 22uf over 250 v.
but i did learn how to make it , tomorow i will hit the electronics surplus supplier and get the proper parts to build it .

Re: DVA meter Do i need one.

I just recently built one from the plans on here and it works fine. I also have several of the 2.2 caps that I will sell very reasonable. Had to buy a lot of 25 when I built mine. Will sell for 1$ each plus postage. send pm if interested. Was fun building.

I have heard of this DVA but have no idea what it is used for. I use my multimeter all the time and would be lost without it.
Can someone explain what the DVA is used for?
Thanks!

The dva stores and reads peak voltage. The dva adapter circuit, in classic electronics parlance, is an integrator circuit. The pulses charge the capacitor until it is at the peak pulse voltage. The resistor across the capacitor discharges it in a few seconds for safety.

The capacitor value is not critical. If it's low, the reading will be a little low and the needle may wiggle. If it's too high, it will take longer to crawl up to peak reading. Likewise, if the resistor value is too low it'll cause low reading and ripple. If it's too high, you might get bit after you disconnect.

hope it helps

Ok thanks for that. My question is why (and where) do you need to see peak voltage?

Whenever the designers tell you that's the parameter that matters, such as an ignition coil drive pulse.

I've looked at most of the circuits on a mercury engine with an oscilloscope. The waveforms are not sinusoidal, but various pulses or distorted waveforms. RMS would mean nothing in checking them, but peak voltage is significant, thus you need to use either an o-scope or a DVA to test them.

hope it helps

I got my parts to make 2 DVA's, bought them at my local electronics shop for only $6.21
now I just need to find time to solder them up and im good to go.

i made my own D.V.A.
and it even works !

i got enough parts to make 2 for less then $10.00 CDN.
