reverse lockout?

I just bought a 03 rinker 212 with a trailmater dual axle trailer. The trailer has disc surge brakes. My question is how do I know if it has a reverse lockout soleniod? Where would the solenoid be located? the trailer came witha a 7 pin connector and my truck is wired for a 5 flat, so i just used a 4 to 7 pin adaptor to get home. Using the manual release was a pain. I had to get out of the truck 3 times just to get it into my garage because everytime a hit a bump the brakes would lock up. If it doesnt have the soleniod how hard is it to install. I was also wondering how I can find out the weight of the trailer. Thank you for the help.

Re: reverse lockout?

What style truck do you have? Ford? Have you checked for 12v power to the blue wire when you put the truck in reverse on the truck side?

Some fords trucks/SUV will need two relays installed in the fuse box under the hood to make the reverse wire work.

The reverse lock out solenoid wire on the trailer is normally blue but sometimes red I believe, Try tracing that wire through the trailer tongue and make sure it's plugged in and it getting 12v power, Sometimes you can hear it click when you add power to it.

Re: reverse lockout?

Next time turn the parking lights on, unplug the trailer 5 wire and connect ONLY the 5th wire to the Brown / Lights plug on your truck/vehicle (the one next to the female)
It will look like a T connection, very odd, but this will enable the relief valve and you will be able to backup trailer anywhere.
Remember to reconnect correctly when done.

In the future buy an adapter from 7pole to 5.

Re: reverse lockout?

My trailers solenoid is located right behind the master cylinder. It will have one or two wires coming from it depending on the manufacturer. My tow vehicle did not have the right connection so a separate wire was run from the reverse wire of the taillights of the truck. Just put a quick connect on it and plug it in when towing. You can also test your solenoid with a 12 volt DC power source. When connected you should hear it click on. Hope this helps.

Re: reverse lockout?

Thanks for the help. I removed the cover behind the master and found that it does have a lockout solenoid. I think I am going to remove the 7 pin connector form the trailer and wire in a 5 pin to match the truck. The 7 pin connector is all corroded anyway

Re: reverse lockout?

if you do that there is a hole on the coupler were you can poke a screwdriver or a pin in there and it will lock out your brakes, its a good thing to unhook your trailer lights when backing into a launch that way you wont eat up your grounds when putting the trailer in the water

With surge breaks and a reverse solenoid, I found that on certain ramps, you need to keep the wire harness hooked up or your wheels will lock up putting undue pressure on your master cylinder and disks. I guess that's why all the lights are supposedly waterproof.

Re: reverse lockout?

WHOOA!! Yes the wire is blue from the solenoid but DON'T wire it to the blue terminal of a 7 pin plug!!! That's for the brake controller. It needs to be wired to the center pin which is usually called out as purple on the vehicle side and is always connected to the back up lights. You can verify this by putting your truck in reverse and stabbing the center pin with a test light. I put discs on my trailer this week and I found the easiest wiring solution for the backup solenoid is to go to U-Haul and buy the bare female 7 pin plug and hardwire it to the trailer. Cost me 10 bucks and now as long as whatever I'm towing my boat with has a 7 pin, my solenoid will always work. In your case, buy the male and female coupler and set it up correctly for a 7 pin NOT the 5 wire which the 5th wire is again hooked up for a brake controller. You'll save yourself a lot of headaches in the long run!
