I wanted to test the funtionality of the light and sensor, what is a safe way to go about doing this?

You can not test the sensor unles you heat it and then you run the risk of melting it. It is a simple bimetallic switch and almost never goes bad. I am assuming you have the type that replaces a bolt next to the spark plug.

To test the rest, with the ignition switch on, short the top terminal of the sensor to ground. The indicator should buzz or the light glow.
