I know this is a 94 40hp long shaft, however, on the plate is as a (S) or a (5) behind it. Anyone know what that means?

According to thos numbers, that is a 1964 Johnson 40hp Standard, Longshaft.

IF---If there were any mid-year changes to the motor, the S would indicate them. IF there were no mid-year changes, the letter is meaningless. It's meaningless anyway unless you are ordering replacement parts affected by it. In that case the parts book would say.
