hi guys.....

im having problems with my bilgeliner again.

1989 3L. it has points.

again this year it wont start with no fire to the holes. i changed the coil last year and drove all over town looking for points, condensor and a cap.

this season it ran sluggish for the first 2 hrs....i pulled it from the water and looked in the cap...it is all rusted again...

i want to go to electronic iginition.......does anybody have a part number off hand?....or where can i go to find a pt number?....

thanks guys, you all rock

Best thing to do is convert to the Delco EST ignition system. It's what is now used on the 90's and newer 3.0L engines for both Mercruiser and Volvo. It's all electronic, advance and all.

If your points are rusty, you can bet the springs and weights are also about shot in your points distributor. Pertronix makes a a replacement kit for the points, but you are still stuck with the same old rust advance mechanism and it costs about half of the EST setup.

^^^ Yup, I'd go with the EST as Don said, $200 for a complete ignition is pretty cheap. Add up the price of the Pertinix module, new wires, cap, rotor, etc, and you are darn near $200, and still stuck with the old dist.

The only real gotcha that I wasn't expecting , while installing the EST, is that you need to rewire the shift interrupt switch. EST needs 12V to momentarily cut the ignition, while points get shorted to ground. I think this is shown in the instructions if you buy the full kit (I installed a used EST).

Even with a used unit, you can see how to wire in the EST in the newer (#13) manual. Or ask, it's not a big problem to deal with.

$199 for the whole deal... that's awesome.

I paid around $65 for a coil for a 3.0 EST last summer...
