Re: How to replace water pump impeller on selectric shift?
See the big outer cover over the rear half of the mid-section? That has to be removed. If it is long shaft, there are covers over the 5" extension too.
OK, with the covers off, you will see the wires. Disconnect them at the powerhead. Now remove the diamond shaped cover plate about half way down. Behind that, you will find another cover plate that the wires are coming out of. First feed the wires through the hole created when you removed the first plate. Then remove the screws from the second plate and pull it off of the wires.
NOW, you are ready to remove the gearcase. First tie a string or something to the wires. You will need that to pull the wires back up through when you put it together. Then remove the big bolt at the rear, and the six smaller ones above the cavitation plate. Then a gentle twist and pull and the gearcase will come down and away. Carefull--don't pull your string all the way out, untie it.
You will now have the water pump right in front of you.
When you put it back together, make sure you have new o-rings on the top end of the drive shaft and on top of the water pump housing. Apply a smear of grease to the drive shaft splines and water tube grommets. Get somebody to help you pull the string up while you install the gearcase. Make sure both water tubes enter the grommets in the pump.
Slop some oil on the ribs of the shift wires before installing the cover plates.
