1962 Arkansas Traveler transom replacement

I recently bought a 1962 Arkansas Traveler for $400 including a trailor. The boat had a camo paint job with "shark teeth" which I decided to paint over. I used scotch brite pads to scuff up the existing paint and painted over it with olive drab Rustoleum xtra flat spray paint.

The boat is in pretty dent shape, but, the bottom of the boat had quite a bit of damage from the former multiple owners. The Boat has been patched and did not leak from the patch. The stern looked like that of a golf ball.

Now, on the boat's "maiden voyage" it leaked like a siv from the transom. We were on the boat for 5 hours and probably took on about 5 gallons or more of water.

Today, I filled the boat with 10 gallons of water and tipped it back, finding all of the leaky rivets. The prior owner had also installed a depth finder in the stern with 4 mismatched screws.

SO, the trasom is riveted to the boat, with an additional brace @ the bottom. How should I go about replacing the transom without having to re-rivet the boat? I'll try to take photos tomorrow if possible.

Thanks, sorry for the windy first post.

we are in the same boat my friend..literally..I have the same boat and the same questions..I just posted above on the aircraft remover thread. I think you could use an air chisel to remove the rivet heads, and go with stainless nut's and bolts to re-attach. i don't see another way unfortunately..how do you like that bottom boat drain?

Yeah, it's not leaking much from the transom, but, enough to be bothersome. I guess I shoulda known when the guy included a builge pump..

The drain plug seems a little hacky to me. I swear the actual plug was a spark plug in another life.

If you look at it closely, both endcaps have to come off, the piece of alum on top of the transom comes off, brackets on either side below waterline to be drilled out, and bottom center bracket also. It looks to be a super hairy job..probably drilling around 30 or more rivets to remove..That's got me stumped as well. i looked at mine long and hard before deciding i can get another year out of it. not to mention the rivets right thru the transom itself..

Just to update, my father & I replaced the transom on this boat about 3 weeks ago & it now works great. I really wasn't tough, but, definitely would have been without the help of my pops.

Here's a pic, although the transom photo didn't come out well, but, this is also after I lined the inside of the boat with rustoleum bed liner.

Feel free to PM me Floatingwoody2006 if you have any questions.
