Hey guys

ive an 05 carbureted mercruiser with an alpha 1 outdrive.

This year i decided to tackle servicing it myself, well got it all done but noticed that the gearbox oil was leaking out the front two holes just under the speedo cable connector thing.

Anyway removed outdrive and looked at everything, the only thing i seen missing was the quad ring seal, i am using the workshop manual, and this part is clearly missing. Would this be the cause of my oil leak ?

Does anyone know the part number for this seal ?

Also do i need to put any sealing paste anywhere whenever i re-install the lower unit.

the quad ring is there to seal the upper and lowers common oil passage. If it's missing, then there will be a leak on the right hand side. What you really need to do is replace the seal (and do the water pump while your in there, if it hasn't been done in a while) and before you fill the drive back up with oil, pressure test it.

The Merc PN for the quadring is 455771. If you buy the OEM impeller kit, the quadring comes with kit, along with the face seal and installation tool.

One other note, since you have an 05 engine, and assuming you also have an 05 outdrive, you have an Alpha I Gen II outdrive, an Alpha I is a lot different and was the predicessor of the A1Gen II drive.

Re: Orange Quad Ring Seal Beside Water Pump

hey

thanks for the help guys, that explains it exackly as my leak is on the right side. Ive already changed the impeller and all gaskets surronding it. Ill not be able to pressure test it as the lower unit already has some oil in it, as i didnt drain the oil out before doing this procedure. Ill get the part tomorrow and install it.

Should i use any sort of sealant on it, or on other parts of the casing ?

I normally stick them in the lower unit with a bit of Bellows adhesive (contact cement). Just to keep them in place in case the upper gets moved a bit up and down in the process of putting it together.

so far i've not used any sealant on that quad ring seal. but i do observe it as i'm bringing the upper and lower together. to be sure it's in place right up to the point where the two halves mate and i can't see the quad ring anymore. i know it's in place cause i saw it right up till when it disappears. i also pressure test after mating the two half and servicing the water pump. just seems like a good idea prior to throwing it in the drink.

hey installed the new o-ring seal and problem is not sorted.

However i was disgusted when the mercury dealer charged me ?6.50 (10$) for a tiny o-ring daylight robbery if you ask me!

What does they cost you guys in the US ?
