I am looking to buy a 1987 88 hp e88mslcus motor and for some reason the two top cylinders register 70 lbs of pressure of compression and the two lower cylinders register 115 lbs of pressure. Is this normal or does anyone know what the reason for this is. I did a wet test, poring oil in cylinders and no change.
Thanks

This is not normal. All four should be relative if your looking at a healthy motor. There are a few things that it could be......low compression due to worn cylinders but the oil should pick up a bit though. Blown head gaskets....unlikely that both are blown and both blown on the top but not impossible. If the motor has been sitting for a long while rings may be stuck allowing blow by but again not likely in both top cylinders and registering the same.......

I would look into things further with that motor before buying it unless your ok with possibly rebuilding!!

possible rings, head gaskets. other than head gaskets, it is going to require a tear down.

Taz is right, you are going to pay $100 for the priviledge of spending between $1500 and $2500 for an overhaul.

i had a motor that registered numbers when i did a test.
after some research i found out i wasnt doing the test correctly...

are you taking all 4 plugs out at the same time. then testing?
also, turn the motor over until the needle on the gauge stops going up.

i did it this way and got 115 on all 4 cylinders.

beforehand i was taking one plug out at a time and testing that way. i also would just bump the starter for a second. when i did it this way it registered top two at 60, and bottom two at 90.

also...it doesnt have to do with compression, but just make sure the 4 plugs are getting spark.

well.......... $100 is only $100

if you get a similar motor, you ahve a lot of parts available that would cost you a lot more than $100 if you have to go find them used someplace.

a running 1987 88 spl HAS to be worth $100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took that same motor from my buddy when a mechanic told he had ZERO compression in one cylinder and 70 in another. while the others were 110.

that motor was running!! and pushing his 25 foot pontoon boat!!!

sure enough it had zero compression in one cyliner...it was all scoured badly..

the TNT and lower unit themsleves could be worth $750-$1000 as parts for another motor!!

good luck

Thanks Bob appreciate your thinking I might just tear it down and rebuild it..
Its a nice looking motor , very clean and shouldn't cost to much in parts.
Thanks again

It will cost about $150.00 to $200.00 per cylinder, if you rebuild it yourself. That depends on if you need pistons and how detailed you are.

As stated, the lower unit is worth much more than $100.00.

Other parts have value too. ebay is a wonerful thing when parting out an outboard.:)

whoa....I am sorry to say, that I wasnt suggesting it would be economical , nor prudent to try and rebuild that motor...

if you did it yourself... and succeeded, it would have to cost you close to $750... maybe more...if you fixed everything you find that you didnt like.

and it would cost at least $2500 to pay a professional to rebuild...

I was just trying to convey that parts for those motors even on the used market are not cheap..and you have a lot of parts that are stiull very usefull.. and worth money...

many many times the parts off a motor are worth double what the complete motor is worth....go figure..

but you have to dissasemble and market the individual pieces to realize that value..

takes time and you need a place to store the stuff.

you mayb find a similar motor that is running excellent, but the lower unit self destructed...

and someone wants $1200 to repair it..and the owner says...not worth it and sells it for $250...

it is a perfect match for you and your parts motor..

good luck

I took a 70 hp apart TOTALLY...

doing a power head rebuild is not really for the weekend part timer..
