Test drive was today!
The pump did well. Engine temp stayed low. We gave it a good 6 or 7 minute run at 3/4 throttle and it warmed up a bit, but even then it stayed around 160.

The carb is crap. When you first get it in gear, it moves, but then when giving it some throttle, it wants to stall. If you feather it on and pump it a bit, it starts accelerating. And once its moving its fine. GOnna rebuild it.

The exhaust noise has gotta go to! LOL it sounds like mowing the grass! I know the bellows leaks, not sure if that could make all that noise or not though. At low RPMs its quiet, but then at some point it starts with the lawn mower sound!

Best thing is my better half and I both enjoyed the boat.(We left the kids out of this one in case we broke down!)

We had some concerns about being able to fish from it, and we put that one to rest. We also had some nay sayers telling us how lousy the capri was in waves, but that thing is a TANK! We got some 3 footers here and there, and it was just fine. I guess its all relative. We started last year in a 16 foot skiff, so comparatively the Capri handled great. Things that would have had me concerned in the old skiff were a non issue.

There are a hundred minor issues to deal with yet, but I have confidence now that my efforts have not been in vain.

Thanks to everyone for your help and patience.

Glad you had a successful trip. Those engines are supposed to run at 180-190 deg. so...

It definitely sounds like the accelerator pump in the carb is bad. You can get Sierra rebuild kits from Iboats.

I have a feeling your work isn't done yet. These old boats need constant maintenance, but I think you're up to the task.:)

Good luck!!

I just bought a new to me 1983 Galaxy 19' with the AQ125A/270.

Friday I was in the process of a normal tuneup including the Hot-Spark conversion. After setting the timing(2 teeth off) I started her up with the muffs and no pumping at all.. I too was told the impeller was replaced late last year. Then, I remembered reading this post and pulled the cover off.. Low and behold, my impeller had sherwood Detroit stamped on it and the fins all crushed against the pump... Small world indeed....

The correct impeller is OTW now...

Weird. Two teeth off and all, like mine.
Anyhow, Make sure you go thru the rest of that crap as well...the elbow connection, etc. I dont feel so good about muffs on an I/O, but then I am a novice. I got a plastic 55 gallon barrel and cut it down a bit...

My "Eureka" moment may have been the result of many things, but that is weird about the impeller. Let me know it the new one is shorter than the sherwood unit! Someone must have some numbers crossed somewhere.

Got my Volvo impeller today, it is smaller than the sherwood that was in there. Standing them up on end, the Volvo one is about 3/16 to a 1/4 inch shorter than the sherwood that was on my boat but the same width.
