thanks optsy, after looking at other pictures of impellars, that one off the ramblings site looks backwards and doesnt fit the logic of the clockwise rotation of the driveshaft.
I'm beginning to think the copper tube did not line up the 1st go around and last night when i re-did everthing i am 95% sure the copper tube fit in the grommet. i'll try it again tonight and count to 30

You need not worry too much about the direction of the veins as they will correct themselves once the motor fires up. Your right though, the picture is wrong but all in all what a fantastic service LeeRoy Wisner has given to us free of charge. So much useful information. Rick.

On my 1975, which has the same mid section and water outlet, it would take some time to fill and come out, often over a minute. When I overhauled the power head, I found the grommet on the upper end of the water tube had degraded and was leaking; not enough to cause overheating, but it reduced the circulation at idle and low speed. With a new grommet, the thing sprayed water quite vigorousely as it once had many years ago. I have to assume that this problem was masked by the fact that when on the boat and underway, it always sprayed, due to the forward movement of the boat making it easier for the pump.

Incidentally, I also removed my water pump and rebult it, my impeller was no worse than yours and had served me well for over 10 years. I have owned the engine since 1978, and it is on it's third impeller, they have never gone bad, but have been lasting 10 years before being changed. I always change the stainless plate and cup, so I put in a new pump kit every time. I know this breaks all the rules about changing impellers every 3 years, so go figure!

I just put a new grommet in tonight, what a difference after installed, no wonder they lose pressure if the rubber is missing- no tight seal against the powerhead.

i'm hoping thats not the problem; dont you have to take apart the whole engine to get at those?
