How to take outboard engine of using engine hoist?

Ok, I got a cherry picker, but I don't know how to attach/secure outboard Force 90 so that I can lift it up. I was planning on using high strength rope. Is there proper way routing the rope so that it can be lifted securely?

Re: How to take outboard engine of using engine hoist?

I have done it with rope, but it is scary. I tied the line under the power head on the outside of the case wrapped several times and tied the bitter end of the rope to itself around the engine so that it stayed upright. It will be top heavy so be sure to secure the rope so that it wont flop over. Do not tie the rope to the flywheel.
I highly recommend spending the money for a lifting ring if it is a heavy engine. (300lbs +) I made a lifting ring with some long 1/4 bolts, a flat plate and a 1/2 threaded ring. I used the puller holes in the flywheel to secure the lifting ring to the flywheel. This is also very scary. It would be easy to pull one of the bolts out of a 1/4 hole. Thankfully it was a smaller engine and there were three puller holes. I have seen a lifting strap setup that lifts engines by cradeling around the power head. But it was rated for lighter outboards.
The lifting rings I have seen screw down to the exposed part of the crackshaft on top of the flywheel. They are ideal but expensive. ($30-$50 if memory serves) I may spring for one when I install my 90hp. I would rather spend a few dollars than drop an expensive outboard and crack something.

Ayuh,... Attach it anyway you want, or Can...
Just be sure to pull from the Top of the powerhead...
If you lift from the mounting bracket, It'll Flop upside-down in a heartbeat...

The safest way is to get a lifting eye and lift straight from that. Basically you remove the flywheel nut and scew on the lifting eye.

If you don't have a lifting eye then it's going to be tricky. I have used large tie down straps off my trailer to lift an outboard before. However mine has two lifting eyes in place already.

Be carefull and remember that the motor may swing when you hoist it off the transom as the center of gravity changes.

As trendsetter240 said, get the proper lifting eye which screws into the end of the flywheel. It is far cheaper than the repairs or injury that could be incurred doing it another way.

Ok, I am interested more in safety, than saving couple of bucks. That "lifting eye" can be picked up in Home Depot? How do I install it? I have to take the fly wheal first?

Thank you guys. Wish I asked this before, now I have to order it and wait for it to come. One more weekend wasted.

No it can't be picked up in Home Depot. The eye itself can but the adapter is the key. It threads into the center of the flywheel. BTW, you don't remove the flywheel nut for lifting.

I cannot see how it can be done without taking the flyweel off. Can you take a look at the photos.

Re: How to take outboard engine of using engine hoist?

or you can go the armstrong method .you need 2 people that are fairly big and away you go.not recommended for weak backs old agers or smaller people, lol. im all the above but small so me and a buddy decided to give it a try and it really wasnt that hard or heavy and mine was a 90 evinrude.from now on i will use the hoist in the garage as soon as i recover.no seriously i was shocked at how easy it was to lift and set on the ground but im 240 lbs and my buddy is 250 so were both fairly big healthy people.theres no eyelet on your force?every motor ive had that was any size all ready had one built on some wheres, maybe im just lucky.

No, there is not one. Center one has no thread, but there are three hole with threads in them, so I am thinking I'll go to HD and buy three eyes and then conect them via rope and then lift it up that way. I don't actually need to lift it just to hold it until I slide engine stand under. You think that would work?

I'm not for sure and for certain, but I believe its like an old merc. It appears like there is a plastic plug that has the top broken off that goes over the nut. The old mercs had a special lifting eye that screwed in over the nut in place of the plug. It kinda looked like a pipe nipple with a eye on the end. I'm not sure that's the same thing you have cuz its been 30 years since I've seen one up close.

im pretty sure you take off the flywheel nut and then you thread on the lifting eye in its place.at least the one i had did that.a lot safer than doing the other way though maybe it would work also but the eye is the real way to go.hard to see but that shaft isnt threaded on the inside is it?if it isnt then the nut comes off and the lifting eye threads on there.

What about the 3 threaded holes in the flywheel? It looks like they are there for a puller. Could you not use those and make a bracket of some kind to lift using those holes?

the 3 holes are for a flywheel puller..... you could probably use them but you might be better off with a proper fixture or two strong guys

Do you have a tilt trailer or a jack? I used two by sixes to block under my lower unit, loosened the motor mount, tilted the trailer while my brother steadied the motor. Voila! Motor off. We then lifted it onto the motor stand. Motor weighed 200 lbs but it was not a problem to get it on the stand only had to lift it a foot..

I had a 90 force, but it had a lifting ring bolted towards the rear of the power head.

You can get a small piece of angle and drill it if there's a couple bolt holes on top some place.

Typically a short length of chain and a couple conveniently located bolts works well.

The yellow piece in the center is a part of a plastic plug. There is an internal thread hidden by that plastic piece. Remove this and then thread the lifting eye adapter into the threads. The adapter has a matching external thread.

Re: How to take outboard engine of using engine hoist?

I went to HD after all, could not wait and waste another weekend. Got eyelets, rated 90lb each * 3 = 270 lb. Engine is 220lb. Here are the results, it was piece of cake. Most of problems was with steering cable, it was tight to get it out. I still have one little hose that runs all the way to the bottom of the engine (see pics) that I cannot pull out. Don't know if I should cut it off or what to do.
