It never ends with an old boat.
Started up fine last weekend, did the seasonal tuneup, commisioning etc. then drained the water piping and fresh water pump housing in case of more freezing weather ahead just like I do for the regular winterizing.

today was doing some other work inside the boat and noticed antifreeze in the bilge, and dripping, definitely not good.

Looks like the drip is slow and steady coming from under the circulating water pump behind the heat exchanger. I need to get a mirror down in there to inspect the drip more closely. If it is the circulating pump how difficult is that to repair? I didnt think regular maintenance or repair would be needed on that pump, but I guess like any car engine the water pump can go out on you.

Can it be done without pulling the engine? I need to decide if I can tackle this or should I bring it to the marina. Any ideas on expense if I have someone do it?

Thanks.

You don't have to pull the engine to replace the circ. pump, and like a cars pump, they do fail. You will find that an automotive pump will NOT fit your setup, so don't go looking for one when you see the price of a new one.
You will have to remove things that are in your way, like the heat exchanger, you just need to get new gaskets, seals and orings for anything you take apart.
As long as you are in there, make sure the timing belt and wheels that it runs on are in good shape, including the tensioner.

PS: The OEM part number for that pump is 3587508. About $330

Don-
can you share the source for that OEM part? all the ones I see online are a lot more expensive than the $330 price.

Can those pumps be rebuilt with seal, bearing, etc.?

thanks,

Joe

Thanks for that link to the new water pump. I found a vendor online that rebuilds water pumps for auto/truck/boat. He will rebuild it with new seals, bearings, and all gaskets to install for $49.99 plus UPS of $11. Sounds like a good deal to me. I could not find a local shop to rebuild it...this is a small town with little support for marine applications so I have to get everything shipped. www.waterpumpman.com

Have never heard of them before, so let us know how it goes. Sounds like a great resource, especially if they can do the old 4 cyl Volvo water pumps.

Will keep you posted Don.

It is worth taking a chance. I did the same thing with a starter two yrs. ago for this boat and had a local guy that specialized in rebuilding starters & alternators do the work and it turned out excellent. He cleaned and completely rebuilt the starter even painted the body of it and its been fine for a fraction of the new replacement cost.
