Hello,

I am looking to repaint my Fathers Old 1970's Aluminum mirrocraft 16 foot boat!

The original color was an aqua blue type and he just painted over it in the 80's with a brown for duck hunting.

Needless to say over the years it looks like poop!

My question is....

What kind of primer and what kind of paint should we use???

I know we should sand it down and prep it but i am clueless and can't find a straight answer for prime and paint!! any help is much appreciated!

thanks,

- Joseph

What is wrong with poop color? Just kidding.

Welcome to iboats!!

Rustoleum is your paint and if you scuff up (not remove) the paint you have on it now ....... you can paint right over it.

If you bare up any spots in the aluminum you will want to prime those spots with zinc chromate primer ...... a very light coat.

Rustoleum has been the choice for interior and exterior of MANY aluminum hulls here and with great results.

I should clarify more...this boat will be in the water only a few occasions over the year...otherwise just garage kept. Its not sitting in the water...

isn't Rustoleum for boats always in the water??? i need clarification.

Like i said, this boat is garage kept and only in the water a couple times a year.

it wont matter that the boat only gets wet 4-5 times a year, use the rusto its a good paint and is not break the bank paint, ive read threads where it has been used and the boat owner is pleased with the product.
these guys havent steered anyone wrong that ive caught and dont think they have anyway, this is probly one of the most open and honest places to get info. we all have a common purpose to keep our vessels in as good of condition as possible, without breaking the bank, if thats possible with a boat.
thats my .02

Ok rustoleum it is

But the brown paint over the OEM paint is blotchy. After all the years of breaking through ice, grounding, etc., the boat is like two different colors. Shouldn't we sand the boat down completely? (i'm afraid my dad didn't do the best job painting over the OEM color)

I'm just afraid of the new paint peeling off because of the old layers of paint.

I just don't know how far down we should sand it down...

thanks again,

- Joe

if his paint job isnt peeling off yet it probly never will.....like they said a good skuffing, quick prime on bare spots.... good to go....

How does the Rustolem work on fiberglass boats? I'm doing a transom job on a Livingston Pacific skiff, and the outer skin needed a major patch, and now subsequent painting. This doesn't have to look like new gel coat, but should be fairly "cosmetic".

Thanks for any info,

just remove any loose flaking paint, scrape it off....then lightly feather the edges, then go over and sand the whole boat, no need to go down to bare surface.....sand down until you hit the blue if you want, prime any bare spots with a light coat of zinc chromate (rattle cans are about 12 bucks, one should be enough)......to be precise, prime any bare spots with the ZC just as soon as possible, i personaly wouldnt wait any longer then 15 minutes, get the whole hull prepped, hit with a coat of primer, hit with a couple coats of your favorite color! the amount of prep and sanding will depend on how show room you want the finished product......have fun with it, dont stress over it too much, just get it done and get that boat in the water !!!

i say that because i can personally be so anal about a project i'll burn myself out on it and miss all the fun....

i will roll and tip because i do not want to have to buff all the neighbors cars/trucks, and i do not have a spray booth, compressor, spray gun, air water/oil seperator, in most cases its just easier and less hassle, although it takes a little longer, but when you consider having to thin the paint to spray, spraying then cleaning the spray equip it probly doesnt take a whole lot longer.

Welcome!
Just as an example..
Original "OEM" paint on top as I bought her..
Bottom is after some washing, scuff sanding, washing again and then rolling on rustoleum with foam rollers. You want to get the kind that are closed cell, typically used for cabinets or in fact alum siding..
Good luck..

Because EVERYTHING I spray looks like he!!.:( I rolled my whole boat, looks fantastic. I sprayed my windshield frame. Looks like crap. Perhaps it's just me and rattle cans that don't get along.
