I took my bravo outdrive out today and I am going start removing 502 mercruiser from my searay 290 sundancer tomorrow. I have read through many of the engine removal post and downloaded the manuals (thanks) I just wanted to ask for any helpful hints before I start.

Thanks for all the help

Re: Engine Removal

Hi Winston, the biggest hint I could give you would be to get your camera and take a ton of pics on everything you touch.... hoses. wires, brackets and accessories. When you get to the front motor mounts pull the lag screws out of the stringers and leave the mounts on the engine.
There are a boat load of other tips and I'm sure others will chime in. Good luck on your project.

Re: Engine Removal

The camera is a great idea! I try to do that with most of my projects because my memory is not what is was. ha

I am guessing the reason you say to remove the lag bolts from the stringers is to keep the alignment so I will not have to realign the motor when it goes back in the boat?

Thanks for the help

No!! You'll still have to do an alignment. It's just easier to pull the engine that way.

I didnt have time to pull the motor last weekend. But I am planning on doing it this weekend so anymore suggestions/hints will help.

Thanks

Re: Engine Removal

Make darn sure you keep the washer spring stack on the rear mounts in the proper order when going back in.

And you will need to realign the engine before you reinstall the drive.

Re: Engine Removal

Wth any project of this nature there will be a need for a heap of shop supplies, including those little, hang-on-the-rack bins for bits and pieces, plentiful shop rags, a handy stash of booze, someone with a double-jointed elbow and, especially handy, someone young and expendable, who can take the blame if it all goes horribly wrong.
Oh yes, and a firearm to shoot anyone filming the adventure if it does go wrong.
You don't want it on You-tube.
But seriously, take it slowly, take plenty of both photos and notes, stop and look if it doesn't feel right, and enjoy some of that booze once the engine is on the stand.

Re: Engine Removal

I removed my motor yesterday. The only problem I ran into is the motor would not come straight out. I had to remove the risers, exhaust manifolds, alternator, alternator bracket, and steering ram and then I was able to rotate the motor 90 degrees inside the engine compartment before it would fit through the hatch. Oh yeah and I forgot to put suntan lotion on so by back is fried but other than that it went perfect. Here are some pics of the process.

We call that "washer spring" a double wound washer, cr2k. How's life been treating you?
